Hawkeyes offer Texas WR
Every year the Hawkeye Football coaches make a strong effort to land prospects out of the state of Texas and they are off to an early start extending an offer to a talented wide receiver from the Lone Star State early on in the process. This week the Iowa coaches extended a scholarship offer to JaCorey Shepherd from Mesquite, TX. It was the first offer for Shepherd and was thrilled to get it.
"I was excited," Shepherd said. "I was at basketball practice when my coach told me that Iowa offered. He told me their receivers coach liked my tape and that they offered a scholarship."
It was the first scholarship offer for the 5-foot-11 and 170 pound junior, who caught 46 passes for 672 yards and seven touchdowns this past season for Horn High School. He was also named Offensive Newcomer of the Year in District 11 of 5A football in Texas. Shepherd said that his coach handles most of the recruit contact at this point, but he has been told that some schools in the Big 12 are also showing interest in him at this time.
This past season when he wasn't playing football, Shepherd actually watched the Hawkeyes play on TV and they left a positive impression.
"I watched Iowa a bit this past year and I liked them. I saw them in the Orange Bowl and they were impressive," he said.
Shepherd says he and his father have talked about making a trip to Iowa City this spring or summer, but no date has been set. He also has one connection to the Iowa program already in place. As a freshman, Shepherd attended Westfield High School in Spring, Texas and at the time current Hawkeye Jonathon Gimm was a senior at the same school.
Shepherd says he is the type of player that can do many things on the field and his goal is to do whatever is asked to win football games.
"I feel like I am a playmaker on the field. I can do a lot of different things to help the team and I was pretty consistent at getting yards after the catch this year to help make big plays."
