Off to a running start
A year ago, Pitt's season opener against Notre Dame roared into Heinz Field and the Panthers limped out of the blowout. On Saturday night, 2006's season opener slid into Heinz Field with a whisper, but the Panthers left the North Shore as a confident, poised, and, above all else, winning football team as Pitt beat Virginia 38-13.
"You're always looking to start the season off on a strong note," head coach Dave Wannstedt said after the game. "It's a start and we'll build from here
it's a good start. It sure beats last year."
There's no doubt that Pitt's season opener of 2006 trumps their first game of 2005, on a number of levels. In a way, the win over Virginia may be a synopsis of what was missing from Wannstedt's first season at Pitt.
