A change of plans for Alvis
Blair Sanderson
HawkeyeReport.com Since committing in December, Dominic Alvis was always going to be a Hawkeye, it was just a matter of when. Originally a grayshirt recruit, he was going to wait and join the team next January, but those plans have now changed. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Alvis, who recently qualified for state track in four events, will be joining the team in August now with the rest of the incoming freshmen. Q: It sounds like you're headed to camp this summer now? ALVIS: Yes, I am. Q: When did you find out about that? ALVIS: I believe it was last Wednesday. They called me up and said they had a few defensive linemen get injured this spring, so there was a spot open. They asked me if I'd like to bump up and I said of course. Q: What was your reaction? ALVIS: It was fun. I didn't want to wait until January if I didn't have to, so it's a great feeling to know that I'm going to be a part of it sooner rather than later. Q: Does it change things for you as far as your plans this summer? ALVIS: Yeah. I might be going down there to lift for a month this summer now. In June sometime I'm thinking. Q: Otherwise, what have you been up to since January when you made your official visit? ALVIS: Just mainly keeping busy with basketball and then track. I've got state track this weekend. Q: You qualified for state in four events, right? ALVIS: Yeah, I did. It's going to be a hectic week, but it's going to be fun. Q: How do you get ready this week when you've got both throwing and running events? ALVIS: I'm just kind of doing the same thing I've been doing. I practice them all every day and just go at it the best I can. I'm getting a lot better at the shot recently. My discus has kind of been in a rut, but I'm working my way out of it. Then the hurdles are coming along too.
