Gesell catching the eye of college coaches
It's been a busy spring and summer for Mike Gesell. The talented 2012 guard from South Sioux City has been on the road with his Martin Brothers 15 and under teammates winning just about every tournament they enter. Along the way, the 5-foot-11 guard has been getting quite a few looks and offers from college coaches.
"Right now I have offers from Iowa State, UNI, Nebraska, and Creighton," Gesell said.
The Hawkeyes have offered two of his AAU teammates and are showing interest in Gesell as well.
"Iowa has been talking to me a little bit. They wanted me to come down and visit, but I haven't had the time to do that yet because of our schedule."
Gesell says that he may be attending Iowa's Elite Camp early next month in Iowa City.
Right now, recruiting isn't a high priority for the 2012 prospect. He has put that on the backburner as he works to improve his game.
"I try not to think about the schools this early. I'm really focused right now on my game. I'll probably really start thinking about recruiting in a year or two," he said.
This past season he averaged 16.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. He also connected on 39% of his three point field goals in his freshman year. His stellar play has continued this spring and summer on the AAU circuit, winning MVP honors in the 15 and under division at the Rumble in the Bronx.
While the individual honors are nice, Gesell is happy to be playing with an outstanding team with teammates that he enjoys.
"We have been really busy, but it has been a lot of fun to play with these guys," he said. "We play really well together. The best part is that this team is a group of fun guys to be around off the court too."
Gesell will have this week off to rest after sharing the 15 and under title at the Chicago Classic with the All Iowa Attack and then he will be off to Orlando for the Super Showcase and then AAU Nationals the following week.
