Vandervelde close to returning
The good news for Julian Vandervelde is that he is back on the practice field. The bad news is that it might be a couple of weeks before he actually plays in a game following surgery in the off season. The junior offensive lineman talks about when he might be back on the field, his rehab process thus far including quite a bit of running, plus much more.
Q: How are you feeling?
JULIAN: I'm feeling good. It's a beautiful day and ready for some football. You always get riled up for game week. This is the best week of the year.
Q: How is your shoulder coming along?
JULIAN: It's getting better every day. Whenever it get there, we are going to surprise somebody.
Q: How far away do you think you are from playing? Coach said maybe by the Big Ten season. Do you feel you are ahead of that?
JULIAN: If they wanted to throw me in there at any point in time, I would do the best that I could do. I think more important than how I am doing is how the other guys are doing. I am feeling alright, but by looking at the practice field, the guys that we have in there are doing a good job. Whatever five we have out there on Saturday are going to do just as good of a job as I could have done.
Q: What has your rehab consisted of?
JULIAN: Strengthening and motion stuff. What you would expect to have when you tear a tendon. It is reattached to the bone now, so we just have to get it to taking an impact.
Q: So with the stretching are you doing stuff like Yoga?
JULIAN: That would be awesome. That would be pretty cool because maybe I could work on my flexibility a little bit. I don't think yoga is on the list. All the stuff that we do in the training room, you wonder how that got on the training curriculum, but it works.
Q: Coach Ferentz mentioned that you are doing a lot of running. How are you enjoying that?
JULIAN: This is the probably the most running that I have done in my life. (laugh) They want to make sure, and they have told me this, that when I come back that conditioning is not a problem. The staff has done a great job to make sure that is not going to be an issue.
Q: Did you get to watch any of the Little League World Series?
JULIAN: A little bit. I was cheering for Urbandale. It ended too soon, but it is always good to see an Iowa team in the Little League World Series. It brings back some memories.
