Smith to attend Wake's Junior Day
Wake Forest will be entertaining a special guest Saturday for its Junior Day in Statesville (NC) South Iredell outside linebacker LaChaston Smith.
However, the Demon Deacons have some ground to gain after the impression North Carolina made on Smith during his trip to Chapel Hill Feb. 8.
"It [visit to UNC Feb. 8] was a great experience to be around such powerful, respectable people in terms of Coach [Larry] Fedora and Coach [David] Duggan," Smith said. "They're pretty high on my range. I don't have favorites."
Alabama, East Carolina, Florida and Virginia are also courting the 6-foot, 215-pounder.
Lonnie Galloway is recruiting Smith for the Deacs.
"We talk on Facebook," Smith said. "I saw him three times. On the third day he gave me an offer. I just want to see where they're [Wake Forest] at with me and what position they want me to play at. A lot of schools have been talking about moving me back to safety."
His good friend, Statesville (NC) quarterback Carlis Parker will be accompanying him on the short trip to Winston-Salem.
"We [he and Parker] have the same kind of interest, and he's pretty much like me," Smith said. "He doesn't want to play for a small school, as in D-2."
In 10 games Smith recorded 82 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, five forced fumbles, five sacks, two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns, and four pass breakups.
Smith missed the final four games of the season due to injury.
South Iredell advanced to the third round of the state playoffs to finish with a 13-1 record.
