March 11, 2011Over the past few weeks, McComb's Deontay Evans has taken his share of trips to attend junior days. That was the case last weekend when the junior athlete made the trek to Memphis for his third junior day event.
"I went to Memphis' junior day and of course, I have also been to Mississippi State and LSU, too," said the 6-foot and 190-pound Evans. "Memphis was very nice and like the other schools I visited, their facilities stuck out to me and they were pretty good. They are also building a lot of new stuff on campus so that was good to see, too."
Evans owns an offer from Arkansas State and is drawing interest from MSU, LSU, Louisiana-Lafayette, Memphis and Nebraska as well. He believes with spring practice right around the corner that more schools will start to join his offer list.
"I talked to Mississippi State every week and I call Coach (Chris) Wilson every week," said Evans. "I believe they are close to offering and that is an offer I am waiting for. I expect to have a lot more offers with training camp coming up because a lot of schools want to see me."
And as far as an early favorite goes, Evans said of late the Bulldogs are starting to grab that role.
"LSU did have the upper hand but now I would say Mississippi State is my favorite and my leader," noted Evans. "I say that because Mississippi State is showing me more interest and I am really feeling their campus and their atmosphere. I know I am going back there for their spring game on April 9th and I am looking forward to that.
"I went to LSU's junior day and it was very nice. Their recruiting coach has called me some but I haven't heard much from them since then."
Last fall Evans lined up at defensive back, running back and receiver and was quite productive on both sides of the ball. He totaled 1,046 yards of total offense and had 17 touchdowns. Defensively, Evans collected 46 tackles with three sacks and three interceptions. This spring, Evans said football has his complete focus.
"I am not playing any other sports and I am working strictly with football," said Evans. "That's just how it is and I want to get better at everything. I am going to work on my techniques and working at getting faster and stronger."
