McCaffery talks comeback win
The Hawkeyes never led Xavier during regulation, but they led when it mattered as Iowa pulled out a 77-74 win overtime. Following the win, Fran McCaffery talked about his team rallying from a significant 2nd half deficit for the victory. McCaffery talks about the performance of Devyn Marble, Gabe Olaseni, and Mike Gesell in the win, and how he got his team to continue to believe they could win this game.
Quotes from Fran McCaffery
"It was an amazing game because we couldn't score early and they [Xavier] really got their transition game going. They obviously run more effectively on misses and [ ] we couldn't get their transition game under control, the backboard under control."
"That's where they [Xavier] live. Offensive rebounding, transition baskets. So once we were able to change the game a little bit and score a little bit more, have a little more offense from different people, we were able to get into our press, play a little more side to side."
"In the huddle, there was no panic. We said, 'Okay, it's 50-56, there's 16 minutes to go, there's plenty of time. We just have to keep chipping away at it.'"
"What's interesting about our team is we have so many different players who can score."
"The thing I really liked about him [Devyn] tonight was how aggressive he was, right from the start. We were clearly sideways offensively. We were fumbling the ball it didn't seemed like it was going to be our night offensively [ ] he triggered our fast break and really got it back to even."
"That's the beauty of his [Marble's] game. He goes for 30, but doesn't go for 30 every night. His greatness is how he effects game in every area. That's why he's special."
"Gabe [Olaseni] was spectacular in every area."
"When you look at this tournament, and in particular, how this tournament has developed, it has become the premier event in this part of the schedule. That's not easy to do, it's not easy to put together that kind of field. You have to say to yourself, 'Will I and am I going to challenge my team at this time of year?'"
"For us, we looked at it as a tremendous opportunity to come to a great place and have the best field out there, and see where we are. Challenge ourselves."
Iowa Player Gabriel Olaseni
"Coaches emphasize confidence. We work on free throws every day, for 25-30 minutes before our practice. We work on free throws in practice when we're fatigued."
"The thing I try to do is just block out everything else and try to focus on what I have to do."
"I feel like with the team we have out there, we're so deep and versatile [ ] we always have the ability to come back. Coach trusts us. We always thought we could win this game."
"Having a tight network of guys, whether we're home or away, we feel like it's against the world."
