The 9th-ranked WSU men's hoop team did not get a comfortable lead until the second half, but did enough to put away the pesky Montana Grizzlies, 66-55, in their opening game of the Cougar Hispanic Fund Challenge at the Spokane Arena. The Cougars were led by 17 points from redshirt junior guard Taylor Rochestie and remained undefeated on the season at 4-0.
Once again, the Cougars' defense was spotty in the first half as Montana used some pinpoint three-point shooting to stay close to Wazzu at 28-26 at halftime. But as they have done in nearly all their games so far this year, WSU opened the second half with some offensive firepower - this time in small, staccato bursts that eventually became a 29-16 bulge near the end of the game. Rochestie was joined in double figure scoring by senior guards Derrick Low and Kyle Weaver, with 14 points apiece, while junior center Aron Baynes tossed in 12 points as he was pulling down a game-high nine rebounds.
The Cougars had only seven turnovers for the entire game - including two in the second half - and have now moved to 11-0 in November games under head coach Tony Bennett.
The Cougars will next play Mississippi Valley State at noon on Saturday, November 24 at the Spokane Arena in Spokane.
