August 20, 2009 The 2009 Iowa high school football officially begins on August 28th and that means a number of future Hawkeyes will be in action. With headliners like the week two matchup of Iowa City High (A.J. Derby) against Cedar Rapids Washington (Andre Dawson), this fall will be one to remember. Find out what other games will be ones to attend this season.Harlan at Denison - Friday, August 28th, 2009 Two committed Hawkeyes will be battling against one another in this season opener. These two teams are rivals and that only adds to the intensity. While Matt Hoch and Brandon Scherff have become friends throughout the recruiting process, these future teammates will want bragging rights in this game. Urbandale at Des Moines Lincoln - Friday, August 28th, 2009 While Harlan vs. Denison has 2010 prospects, this game will have two much younger players. Urbandale safety Travis Perry and Des Moines Lincoln running back Keevon Bernstine will be looking to help their team get the season started right. Perry is a prospect in the mold of Tyler Sash as he also excels in basketball. Bernstine is the brother of current Hawkeye Jordan Bernstine and had a chance to get some good time at the varsity level as a freshman. Cedar Rapids Washington at Iowa City High - Friday, September 4th, 2009 I jumped on the A.J. Derby bandwagon after seeing him dominate this game and help the Little Hawkeyes to a win last fall. Iowa City High will come in as a heavy favorite but Washington still boasts running back Andre Dawson and a host of other talented players. Expect this to have some major MVC implications on the conference races. Valley at Dowling - Friday, September 4th, 2009 No real Iowa ties here but this game may be the most bitter and well attended rivalry in the State. For those in central Iowa, making a trip to West Des Moines is worth it here. Heelan at Harlan - Friday, September 4th, 2009 Getting a chance to see Matt Hoch is worth the price of admission but this game is about seeing the athletic ability of a future Hawkeye basketball player, Zach McCabe. This senior was limited in his throwing opportunities as a junior but did earn All State honors as a sophomore at quarterback. Indianola at Sioux City East - Thursday, September 10th, 2009 Quenton James is one of the most explosive athletes around after a fantastic sophomore year. He will be tested by a tough CIML Central opponent in Indianola. The Indians also boast one of the top seniors in running back Michael Chia. Iowa City West at Iowa City High - Thursday, September 17th, 2009 There are a variety of reasons for Hawkeye fans to make the trip to see this game. They include A.J. Derby, the Battle for the Boot, and the chance to form your own opinion on Iowa State Cyclone commit Jacob Gannon. Williamsburg at Mount Pleasant - Friday, October 9th, 2009 While Jordan Cotton may be graduated, this game will still likely affect the district title race while putting two potential future Hawkeyes in action. Austin Blythe of Williamsburg remains the only football player in the Class of 2011 to hold a scholarship offer. Darian Cotton, younger brother of Jordan, is a fantastic athlete who will get a chance to get out of the shadow of his brother. Expect a great game from both sides. Carroll at Ballard - Friday, October 9th, 2009 This has all the makings of a quarterback showdown. In one corner, you have future Hawkeye quarterback/athlete Austin Vier. This senior wowed the coaching staff at camps this summer and eventually received an offer before committing. Carroll boasts Blake Haluska, an All state signal caller who put up some jaw dropping numbers as a junior. Without any offers at this point, I can guarantee Haluska will come out with something to prove here. Solon at Iowa City Regina, Friday, October 16th This game ended up deciding the district title a year ago and will factor into the 2009 playoff seedings. Solon obviously boasts James Morris, a very talented linebacker who does just about everything for the Spartans. His ability to make plays defensively will make him a standout at the next level. Regina will bring their A game and make it difficult for the two time defending champions. Davenport Assumption at Bettendorf - October 23rd, 2009 Two tradition rich MAC programs will be going head to head in the season finale. Joe Daniel of Assumption and Trent Moorehead of Bettendorf who the Hawkeyes will be watching during the fall months. |
