Does anyone have a list or their personal opinion for next year's top players from the state of Iowa? Does it appear to be a pretty strong class, or a little on the light side?

Thanks.

Havent heard much outside of the OL from Valley.

Posted on 2/6 3:50 PM | IP: Logged

Looks like Campos (OL) and Raridon (DT) from Valley and Wisnieski (TE) from Dowling all have Iowa offers so far.

A few other names are likely to be higher profile recruits as well from what I've heard, namely Starcevich (QB) and Alexander(WR/ATH).

Here's a list of prospects from Iowapreps as well

Not sure about the class as a whole, but I believe when the final rankings come out Campos may very well be the highest ranked prospect at his position to come out of the state in years.

Sweeney, OL-Sioux City Heelan 6-6 300 will get a few offers --not sure if Iowa is interested.

Going based off my knowledge from the games I saw and the players I know about.

My expected Top player is Dondre Alexander WR from IC West. He is already being actively recruited by Wisconsin, Iowa, Iowa State, and Michigan State from what I am aware of.

Kyle Starcevich from Southeast Polk will be the best Pocket Passing QB prospect since James Vandenberg. AJ Derby was more of a Dual-Threat QB prospect.

Blake Gimbel from Marshalltown will be interesting to see. He plays in a spread/pass heavy offense and racks up a ton of yards. His stats are pretty impressive, but I am not sure he will grow into a big prospect. I would see him as a potential walk-on to ISU or Iowa as a QB at this point. UNI offer possible and he could improve enough for some other offers.
----------------------------------------------------------

I think Runningback is going to be a down position in 4A this year. One to look forward to is Tyus Mason from West Des Moines Valley. He was a sophomore this last season and he shows a ton of shiftiness and speed. He has a pretty small frame at this point, but if he can pack on some strength and keep up the mobility/improve on it then he will be a very solid prospect 2 years down the road.

SEP will have 2 solid RB's, but I don't seem them as college RB prospects at a BCS level.
------------------------------------------------

Other WR prospects are Tad Steffensen of Marshalltown. He isn't really big, but he comes from a pass heavy MTown offense and showed a lot of catching ability as a Junior with 64 catches 1004 yards and 9 TD's.

Derek Willies(6'3 185) from Burlington and Jeremy Morgan(6'5 160) from IC West both have good size and decent hands, unlike Dondre Alexander(6'3 205), they lack the strength. They would both become very solid prospects if they can gain 20-30 pounds of muscle.

I think Morgan is probably a better basketball prospect at this point in time.

Willies is probably going to be a solid football player for someone. I am thinking FCS level with his current size. Like a Jared Herring type of player for UNI. He has very solid abilities and is a pretty good blocker for a WR, but he needs to add to his frame a little.

Guy to keep an eye on is Junior-to-be Marshall Clark of Ankeny. He is 6'0 175 as a sophomore and averaged 22 YPC on 36 Catches this season. I would guess he may move to RB as an upperclassman unless he continues to grow height wise.

--------------------------------------------------
Defensively I personally had one kid I liked from Bettendorf in the playoffs.

Savion Coleman 6'0 250lb DT from Bettendorf. He was a real force against a pretty big Cedar Falls OL in the playoffs. He will be the only returning starter on defense from the 4A Runners Up. I was also a big fan of DeAdrian King who really had his way with the CF OT's all game as well. He was a 6'3 235lb DE. He is going to Iowa Western next year, so I am guessing he may have had some grade issues.

Cole Picchiotti from Pleasant Valley 6'0 190lb LB. He will likely be a safety prospect if anything. I think he has a similar skill set to tim Kilfroy who signed with UNI this year. He does have room to improve however.

Jesse Peterson from Iowa City West 6'1 196lb LB. He reminds me a lotof Nate Shaw from Bettendorf and is heading to UNI next season. If he can add something to his frame and a little more pop to his tackles he could end up being as good as Ben Challgren from Cedar Falls who committed to Duke.

Anthony Combs from Sioux City West 6'0 210lb MLB/FB. He is the closest to being a FBS LB from Iowa at this point. He hits pretty darn hard, but I am not sure he has the quickness necessary to play LB at the FBs level. I would say he has Ben Challgren potential, but he isn't quite there yet.

I can't go through the whole list but here are the others I would look at...
OL Prospects:
Jake Campos WDM Valley 6'7 244
Ryan Glenn Waukee 6'1 235 2nd Team All State
Ross Pierschbacher Cedar Falls 6'4 275 1st Team All State(Junior)
Austin Holzer CR Kennedy 6'3 241 3rd Team All State(Junior)

DL/LB Propsects:
Sam Raridon WDM Valley 6'2 256 2nd Team All State
Kelvin Clark Waterloo East 6'2 217 2nd Team All State
Russell Jones Waterloo East 6'1 191 3rd Team All State

DB Prospects:
Allen Lazard Urbandale 6'4 190 3rd Team All State(Junior)
-----------------------------------------------------------

3A prospects... I don't have a lot of knowledge on this class. I know some of the skill-position prospects, but here is a list of some kids.

3A Prospects:
OL- Bryce Sweeney SC Heelan 6'6 300
OL- Josh Clark Union 6'2 249 1st Team All State
OL- Noah Taylor ADM 6'4 275 1st Team All State
DL- Zach Skibinski SC Heelan 6'4 225 1st Team All State
LB- Josey Jewell Decorah 6'1 201 1st Team All State- I like this kid a lot. He is definitely not afraid to hit anyone!
DB/S- Trev Hadachek 5'11 166 1st Team All State- He is undersized at this point, but still being talked to by some FBS teams last I knew.
OL- Alex Moerer Waverly Shell Rock 6'4 255 2nd Team All State
WR/DB- Josh Schulte Anamosa 6'1 175 2nd Team All State(WR)
DB- Luke Neitzel Creston 6'2 185 2nd Team All State

2A Prospects-
QB- Jesse Ertz Mediapolis 6'3 185 1st Team All State
P- Cameron Vinsand Riverside 48.5 YPP on 20 punts
LB- Kirby Kendrick Beckman 5'11 205 1st Team All State
WR/TE/DL- Duncan Ferch 6'3 185 1st Team All State (Utility)(Junior)
OL- Max Gangestead Clarion-Goldfield 6'0 239 2nd Team All State
DB- Paul Brown Spirit Lake 5'10 190 2nd Team All State

1A Prospects-
DT- Dante Copeland Panorama 6'3 310 1st Team All State
LB- Dalton Gilbert Central Decatur 5'11 205 1st Team All State
RB- Andrew McCune Woodward Granger 6'1 235 1st Team All State
RB/WR/DB- Paul Hutson Logan Magnolia 6'2 195 1st Team All State(Utility)

A Prospects-
OL- Ricky Williams Riverside, Oakland 6'3 275
QB- Gabe Lorack Lone Tree 6'2 163 1st Team All State
OL- Pat Smith West Hancock 6'0 260 1st Team All State
LB- Kane Louscher MC Newman 6'2 205 1st Team All State
DL/LB- Nolan Hefty North Tama 6'3 215 1st Team All State
DB- Rob Rottler North Butler 6'1 185 1st Team All State

8-Man Prospects-
OL- Cory Bertram Clarksville 6'2 220 1st Team All State
DL- Jack Janett Kee 6'3 240 1st Team All State
WR/DB- Tate Rohde Kingsley Pierson 6'1 170 1st Team All State(Utility)
DL- Seth Phillips Freemont Mills 6'0 235 65 Tackles
DL- Keaton Tebbe Preston 6'2 240 2nd Team All State

I based all of these players off the All-State lists from last season if you were talking with regards to my post.

Ditto for me Max. You do a lot of homework and it's always great to read something that has a lot of info in it. As opposed to a KOK sucks, why didn't we recruit so-and-so, etc.

Thanks for all that. It's appreciated.

Great post, Maxstabs - terrific info.

I couldn't help but wonder if anyone from that Bettendorf DLine would get a look. That Valley OLine was huge and talented and if you watched that 4A title game - the Bettendorf DLine more than held their own.

Posted on 2/7 9:36 AM | IP: Logged

Max, no big deal but Ferch is a sophomore. (Junior to be) Also, he is probably 6'2 and around 190#

Anyone listed as "Junior" is a Junior-to-be everyone else that isn't noted is a Senior-to-be.

I didn't see the Title game, but saw both Semifinal games. CF, Bett, and Valley all had Big OL's. Ankeny probably had the athletes to hang with the other 3, but they were over-matched in the trenches.

The main weakness I saw for Ankeny and CF was the fact they played more guys both ways than Valley and Bettendorf did. That makes what Bettendorf does even more impressive, because they are a mid-pack team(21st I think in Enrollment) as far as size in 4A. Valley(1st), Ankeny(2nd or 3rd), and Cedar Falls(10th or 11th). The fact they can get that many good lineman on both sides of the ball is just really impressive.

I hope Iowa looks at King when he is done at Iowa Western. Devon Spreen was actually the leader in sacks for them, but I think he will have to move to LB in college. He was pretty undersized.

If you are curious about other players that are playing college sports from Iowa next season here is a list of commits updated January 30th.

It would be nice to take them all! Naturally, we can't. That's why the coaches get the big bucks, right?

If we could get Dondre Alexander from IC and the 3 kids from WDM - Campos, Raridon and Wisnieski and the 2 kids from SC Heelan - well that would be a pretty good take. Then keep front and center for Piershbacher and the LaPorte City QB for next year that would be great. (Campos is already an uphill battle, FWIW)

Also, I like what you say about the kid from Decorah already - no such thing as having too many kids that like to hit!

Just a small clip on him, but it shows a little bit of his physical mentality. Also, if you read the article below it will give you an idea of how hard-nosed Decorah plays.

I think we have a good chance at most of the top Iowa players.

Must Gets IMO:
Campos
Alexander

Good Gets:
Raridon
Wiscenski(sp?)
Copeland
Sweeney

Potentially Good Gets:
Willies(Moved from Burlington to Rock Island)
Starcevich
Gimbel
N. Taylor
Ertz
Moerer
R. Williams

Late/Missed on others picks:
Jewell
Picchiotti
Coleman
Combs
Vinsand
McCune
P. Smith

That may seem like a big list to most people, but barring grade issues and injuries I think they will all be pretty well sought after.

The "Good Gets" and better will at worst see non-BCS conference offers. The "Potential Good Gets" could work into the "Good Gets" list and see those offers as well. The guys who stay in the "Potential Good Gets" and the "Missed/Late" category will likely see some D1-AA(FCS), D2, D3, and CC recruitment/offers.

Posted on 2/10 1:31 AM | IP: Logged

Marions Andrew Davis(6'7" 200) will sneak in there once the season starts. Arm injury slowed down recruiting. My dad knows some people that said he impressed at iowa camp last year and if not for broken arm would have offers from many people. Played against him in bball this year and arm seemed fine, wore an arm cover and it didnt seem to bother him. Dont know him personally so i dont know if hes currently talkin to iowa or anyone else, but i can try to find out.

Starcevic tore up his knee a few weeks ago. Also, any reason why you left Lanning out, you seemed to cover everyone else?

I knew an ANkeny guy would chip in eventually 3dGrin

Info from every end of the state shouild be appreciated. Why the snide remark about Ankeny?

I see a lot of AJ Derby in him offensively. If he is recruited by Iowa it will be as a DB or LB. I haven't seen him play defense enough to know if he is any good.

Posted on 3/15 12:38 AM | IP: Logged

Copeland from Panorama comes from some good bloodlines. I know his grandpa was an allstate LB and his mom was a very good athlete as well. He is a big kid with decent feet. I believe he will need to get a lot stronger but he has a big frame. Comes from a smaller school , same coaches and Jordan Carstens, the walk on at ISU that eventually earned a scholly and ended up with the Carolina Panthers.

Arkansas, Mich St, ISU, and Wiscy have been talking to Skibinski. Here is his film from last year.

Willies made his unofficial. It will be interesting how much better or worse he will be playing in Illinois HS football this year.

Does anyone know if Dalton Gibert (Central Decatur, Leon) has received any legitimate D1 interest?

I had heard about the FSU rumor and was pretty surprised, to say the least.  I'm also assuming he is walking on.

FWIW my mom has heard that the Iowa coaches are still in contact with Ricky Williams and that he has been to some games this fall.  He is a 6-7 (or 6-3 depending on source :) 275 pound junior who is also a good basketball player.

Weisinski is a 4* on ESPN VS Campos who is a 3* on ESPN,  so there is some question as to who the best in state player out there is, if you are talking about need Weisinski is a bigger need as Iowa did not get a TE last year. and next year Iowa has Render and Peirschbacker a pair of highly reguarded Guards and it sounds like there is a Tackle by the name of Boothe with ties to KF at 6'7 340 lbs, then there is Boone a WR out of Indiana with Connection to the Kenney and Kenny from Indiana as well as a RB out of Minnesota that is teammates with Rucker, all are highly reguarded for next year, the hard will be Lazard out of SE Iowa who's dad graduated from ISU, who's projected to be a top 100 player, next years class in Iowa looks to be loaded and there are several top rated kids interested in Iowa

Lazard from the CIML in Central Iowa you mean?
