Adidas Best Buy Classic - Recap

The Adidas Best Buy Classic in Chicago kept some of the nation's top prospects very busy over the Memorial Day weekend. With the competition at a high level, several targets in Musketeer recruiting stood out.

Monte Morris - Michigan Mustangs 17u - Watching Morris play as a potential Xavier recruit is a little bit of "window shopping", as the four star combo guard doesn't consistently rank the Musketeers among his top schools, but his talent is just too intriguing to stay away from. Morris was at his best over the weekend in leading the Mustangs to a semifinal appearance along with running mate Derrick Walton. He shot the ball well from deep, creatively attacked the rim, and showed the capability to run the team. The more times that we watch Morris the more we become sold on him as a complete player as he really showed something extra as a leader and defender on Sunday.

Devin Williams - Ohio Basketball Club 17u - Big Devin had another nice weekend by playing with a high motor and competing. His teammates showed more trust in him to take the big shots, and he responded by taking high percentage looks in the right situations. He proved that he's one of the best rebounding forwards on the Adidas circuit, and that physically few players can move him out of the paint.

Alex Etherington - Indiana Elite 17u - The 6'5 wing is a player that a lot of high majors are recruiting, but not one that anyone has made a top priority at this point. Over the weekend Etherington played more like a high major. In leading his team to a quarterfinal matchup with the Florida Rams he displayed high level athleticism, toughness, and an aggressive penetrating style. He still needs to show more as a shooter but he has a chance to go somewhere like Xavier and become a solid role player.

Kevin Johnson - Ohio Basketball Club 17u - Johnson was performing at a high level again over the weekend before suffering a sprained ankle late in his team's first game. Kevin did not return to the action after that. Prior to the injury he was shooting the ball very well from deep and athletically attacking the rim for dunks or layups.

Bryant McIntosh - Eric Gordon All Stars 16u - We talked a little bit about what McIntosh can bring to the table with our story on his visit, which has been scheduled for Wednesday. He's a high level shooter and scorer that is really creative as a playmaker off the bounce. His high basketball IQ, aggressive style, and pure scoring mindset make him a tough player to defend; even though he doesn't look physically imposing. McIntosh has seen his recruiting stock skyrocket so far on the AAU circuit and the Musketeers should be happy to get an early visit with him.

Sean Sellers - Eric Gordon All Stars 16u - Sellers is a stretch forward that goes to school with McIntosh. He's big of a tweener at this point in his career but he has the talent, and one elite skill with his shooting, to become a deadly perimeter scoring threat with time. One of the top young players in Indiana, the Musketeers have an early eye on the 6'6 wing forward.

Darius Austin - Team DRose 16u - Austin switched teams for the weekend, he usually runs with the SW Illinois Jets, and teamed up with one of the nation's most talented young groups for a quarterfinal run before losing to the Florida Rams. Austin didn't look great in his time on the court, but he was able to produce double figure scoring numbers while knocking down some jumpers and attacking the rim in spots. As a multiple occasion visitor he's very familiar with Xavier, and listed the Musketeers among his top schools in a postgame conversation.

Ray Kasongo - Ohio Basketball Club 16u - Powerful forward with athleticism and just about unlimited talent on the wing or post, Kasongo is just now finding his way onto the radar of high major schools. He's got a long way to go in his development, as he just got to the United States courtesy of Canada and will be attending Oak Hill Academy (VA) next season, but his ceiling is intriguing. Xavier coaches plan on evaluating Kasongo in person during the July AAU period.
