Mathews ready for a big summer

While he has the chance to make a name for himself this summer, Santa Monica (Calif.) shooting guard, Jordan Mathews said he is just interested in making steady improvement. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound scorer will be in Chicago for the Kevin Durant Skills Academy; Las Vegas for the Lebron James Skills Academy and will take part in the finals for the Peach Jam as well.

All of it could add up to a high level of exposure for Mathews, who said his goal is much more simple that that.

"I just want to get better and prove that I can actually play with the best, that is what it is all about for me," Mathews said. "I want to work on my explosion and second jump and things like that."

Last season Mathews was named MVP of the Ocean Conference, leading Santa Monica High to a league title and a 20-9 record. He was also named All-CIF First Team along the way, averaging 21.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, four assists and two steals per contest.

"I can score the ball," Mathews said when asked his strengths. "I am becoming a better distributor, but I can really score. I am a jump shooter, first and foremost."

The scholarship offer list for Mathews currently numbers four - Wyoming, Colorado, San Diego State and Virginia Commonwealth. Mathews said he is hearing from a host of other schools such as Nevada, Gonzaga, Kansas State, Kansas, Indiana. However, he hasn't named a top-10 and said he is going to take his time in the recruiting process.

Mathews' Wyoming connection comes from former UCLA assistant coach and current Wyoming assistant, Scott Duncan. Coach Duncan used to be on the same Bruin staff as Mathews' father, Phil and has been in touch with the younger Mathews regarding a career in Laramie.

"I knew Coach Duncan from when he worked with my dad at UCLA, so he is recruiting me," Mathews said. "He said I could come in and make an impact, help the team win games immediately. They are on a tract to being really, really good.

"They have a chance," Mathews said. "Everyone has a chance. I am going to take it all in and see where I fit bet in the end."

Mathews said he is looking for a strong business school, as well as a place to win right away, somewhere he can improve and find a family atmosphere.
