Mitchell getting ready

St. Louis native Derrick Mitchell Jr. is one of the most versatile recruits that Iowa has signed in recent years having played quarterback, running back, wide receiver, linebacker, and safety in his high school career. Now the question is where will the 6-foot, 185-pound playmaker line up in college for the Hawkeyes? We caught up with Mitchell to find out which position he prefers, when he will be arriving in Iowa City, what he is looking forward to in his upcoming freshman year, and much more.

Q: What has it been like for you this spring as you wrap up your senior year of high school?

MITCHELL: It's been a great experience. Now I think I'm ready to take on the next phase of my life.

Q: Are you already done with classes?

MITCHELL: Yeah, I graduated already. That was this past weekend.

Q: When are you looking to make the move to Iowa this summer?

MITCHELL: I'm leaving on June 9 and getting my physical there the morning of June 10.

Q: What are you looking forward to in moving up there for the summer?

MITCHELL: I'm looking to start off on the right foot like I did in high school and as the years go on in college just finish strong. I'm going in there focused. That's focused on the game and on school, just getting my study habits together and working hard.

As a senior, the versatile Mitchell finished with 468 yards passing, 712 yards rushing, and 378 yards receiving, scoring 21 touchdowns in all, and also had 50 tackles on defense for St. Louis Vashon. In June, Mitchell committed to Iowa over scholarship offers from Nebraska, Cincinnati, Indiana, Iowa State, Kansas, and Kansas State, among others.
