Campos arrives at U.S. Army All-American Bowl

MORE: U.S. Army All-American Bowl

SAN ANTONIO - Jake Campos was sitting around watching television Sunday afternoon when the surprise phone call came.

He was getting a late invitation to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl but he could not immediately accept because… his parents weren't home.

"I had to wait for them," Campos said.

"They were at a movie so when they came back we talked about it and we called back right away. They were in the movies so I couldn't get a hold of them. It made me a little nervous."

The Iowa State four-star offensive tackle commit from West Des Moines (Iowa) Valley arrived here Monday morning, walking into the West practice with Army gear on, carrying an Army bag with a nameless practice jersey since he was a late addition.

It's been a whirlwind couple of days for Campos, who said he's excited to start practicing as soon as possible but also still wide-eyed by the surprise invitation.

"It was very, very exciting," Campos said. "I wasn't expecting it at all.

"As soon as my parents got home we called back and we got a plane for today," Campos said. "I was planning on watching TV today so it was a big change."

The Army week could be an optimal time for recruiting but the 6-foot-7, 250-pound prospect said he's all set for Iowa State.

After being committed early to Missouri, Campos flipped to the Cyclones and is sure he found the right spot. He's not interested in looking around.

"I went out and I saw the engineering school, which is what I want to do, and it kind of blew me away," Campos said. "I got to see Ames and coach (Paul) Rhoads and the staff. The program is going to the right place."

With that, Campos was off to the locker room to change for Army practice, a place only a few hours ago he hadn't even considered being.
