Conversation with J.R. Angle

Last week at the Nike All-American Camp, Hawkeye Report spoke with Iowa commit J.R. Angle. We talk about his performance at the Nike Camp, the USA Basketball Developmental Festival, and showing his pigs at the fair.
Q: How has the Nike Camp gone for you?

ANGLE: I feel like I have done very well. I feel like I am holding my own here. I have shown that I can shoot the ball from the outside, post up on the inside when I have an advantage and get my teammates the ball as well.
Q: Has the camp been what you expected it to be?
ANGLE: Oh yea. I got a taste of it last week in Colorado Springs at the Developmental Festival. Everything has been at a faster pace and guys are quicker and stronger than I would see back in high school. This is the best of the best, like in Colorado.
Q: So I would assume that playing in Colorado Springs really helped you to prepare for coming to Nike?
ANGLE: It really did help me get prepared and adjust for the style and level of play here at Nike. It is something that I can now take home and start to work on with the areas I need to improve on for next year and beyond.
Q: Being an Iowa commit, what do you expect from the Hawkeyes this coming season?
ANGLE: I definitely think that they will be a top contender in the Big Ten this coming season. They have the talent coming back and some good players coming in and there is no reason why they should not be in the tournament this year.
Q: After committing early, do you still get other schools contacting you to see how solid that commitment really is?
ANGLE: Yea I get that from time to time. I still get a lot of letters every day and I will read some of them, but I don’t give them any interest. I am a diehard Hawkeye fan.
Q: The big question is how are your pigs doing? (Laugh)
ANGLE: Actually I am missing the County Fair right now where they are showing, so I don’t have any idea. I have a buddy of mine showing them and I have to sell them on Friday, so hopefully I will get some big bucks from them. That is my spending money. (laugh)
Q: I also hear that you are somewhat of an Internet junkie?
ANGLE: Yea, I am on there all the time checking things out. I love to get on there and instant message my friends and talk with them on-line.
Q: How important has your dad been in your basketball development?
ANGLE: He has been a coach for 36 years, so I know that he understands the game of basketball. If he tells me something that I need to do I am going to listen to him because he knows what he is talking about. Everyday he is telling me something new to work on to improve and make my game better.
Q: Does your workout include the “Alford Workout”
ANGLE: I did that when I was younger more than today. I still do things from the All American workout just about every day to improve my game.
Q: Have you had a chance to meet Alex Thompson here at the camp.
ANGLE: This is first time I have actually met Alex and he is a great guy. I think he and I are going to be a great combo at Iowa.
