Performance of the week

Running back Ivory Kelly-Martin got the year off to a huge start with 24 carries for 222 yards and 4 touchdowns in his season opener on Friday night. For Kelly-Martin, it marked his debut at Oswego East High School after transferring from Nazareth Academy last winter. With his rushing performance leading the way, the Wolves posted a 49-14 win over Joliet West to move to 1-0 on the young season.

Other notable performances

Running back Eno Benjamin also had a big game on Friday, finishing with 23 carries for 156 yards and 2 touchdowns in Wylie East's 24-21 victory over Rockwall-Heath. Benjamin, who does a little bit of everything for his team, was also 2/2 passing for 37 yards and handled the punting duties for Wylie East.

Quarterback Peyton Mansell completed 25 of 37 pass attempts for 233 yards and 2 touchdowns on Friday, but it was not enough as Belton lost to Temple 28-20. Mansell was also his team's leading rusher, finishing with 15 carries for 87 yards in the game.

Wide receiver Gavin Holmes hauled in 12 catches for 129 yards as Justin Northwest won their season opener 27-21 over Alvarado on Friday. Holmes also had 1 carry for 19 yards on the ground as well.

Levi Duwa had 4 tackles and 2 sacks on defense to go along with a nine yard touchdown catch on offense as Mid-Prairie won their season opener 41-14 over Louisa-Muscatine on Friday.

Cornerback Josh Turner had 5 tackles and 2 pass breakups, but saw his Delray Beach American Heritage team lose to Naples 50-17 on Friday.

Wide receiver Brandon Smith had 5 catches for 70 yards as Lake Cormorant won easily 49-0 over Douglass on Friday. Not included in those stats was an impressive juggling catch (see below) for a 53 yard touchdown that was called back due to penalty. Overall, Smith has 10 catches for 110 yards and 1 touchdown for Lake Cormorant (1-1) this year.

Tristan Wirfs led the way upfront as Mount Vernon racked up 255 rushing yards, but still came up short, losing to Solon 26-21 on Friday. On defense, Wirfs finished with 4 tackles and 2.5 TFL in the game.

Playing against Wirfs, Jacob Coons had 1 catch for 23 yards on offense and 3 tackles on defense as Solon beat Mount Vernon 26-21 to start the season 1-0.

Chevin Calloway had a blocked punt in Bishop Dunne's season opener, which was a 45-24 victory over Deer Park on Friday.

A.J. Epenesa scored on a 2 yard touchdown run and led the Edwardsville defense as they posted a 35-6 win over Quincy in their season opener.

Matt Hankins finished with 5 tackles and 1 pass breakup, but saw Arlington Bowie come from behind to beat his Flower Mound Marcus team 40-39 on Friday.

Camron Harrell scored a rushing touchdown on offense and led a great defensive effort from Bradley-Bourbonnais as they shut out Champaign Centennial 34-0 on Friday.

Mark Kallenberger and his Bettendorf team had a tough go of it at West Des Moines Valley on Friday, finishing with only 190 yards of total offense in a 49-13 loss.

Coy Kirkpatrick sat out with a minor injury on Friday, but Madrid had no problem with Woodward-Granger, winning 47-12 in their season opener. Kirkpatrick is expected back for week two.

Djimon Colbert's Bishop Miege team opens the season on September 2nd at home against Mill Valley.
