Performance of the week

Wide receiver Gavin Holmes had a ridiculous game on Thursday night with one big play after another as he racked up 10 catches for 240 yards and 4 touchdowns. The majority of those numbers came in the first half as Justin Northwest built a big lead and eventually won 69-46 over McKinney North. Through 2 games this season, Holmes already has 22 catches for 369 yards and 4 touchdowns for Justin Northwest (2-0).

Other notable performances

Quarterback Peyton Mansell was 11/12 passing for 136 yards and 3 touchdowns on Friday night. He also had 9 carries for 134 yards and 2 touchdowns in Belton's 55-27 win over Pflugerville Hendrickson. Through 2 games, Mansell has completed 36 of 49 pass attempts for 369 yards and 5 touchdowns with no interceptions. On the ground, he has 24 carries for 221 yards and 2 touchdowns for Belton (1-1) this season.

Running back Ivory Kelly-Martin only got 9 carries on Friday night, but he made the most of them, finishing with 161 yards and 4 touchdowns in Oswego East's 48-14 win over Romeoville. Through 2 games, Kelly-Martin has 33 carries for 383 yards and 8 touchdowns for Oswego East (2-0).

Wide receiver Brandon Smith had a big game on Friday with 6 catches for 112 yards and 2 touchdowns in Lake Cormorant's 42-3 win over Holly Springs. Through 3 games, Smith now has 16 catches for 222 yards and 3 touchdowns for Lake Cormorant (2-1).

Levi Duwa finished with 11 tackles and 1 TFL to go along with 6 catches for 73 yards and 1 touchdown on offense, but it was not enough as Mid-Prairie lost to Washington 49-14 on Friday. Through 2 games, Duwa has 15 tackles, 3 TFL, and 2 sacks on defense and 7 catches for 82 yards and 2 touchdowns on offense for Mid-Prairie (1-1).

Defensive back Djimon Colbert had 4 tackles, 1 TFL, and 5 pass breakups in his season opener on Friday, but saw his Bishop Miege team lose to Blue Valley by a score of 35-28. Next, Bishop Miege (0-1) plays at Gardner-Edgerton on September 9.

Eno Benjamin had another impressive all-around game as he finished with 21 carries for 195 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground to go along with 135 yards passing and 1 touchdown through the air in Wylie East's 49-0 win over Hallsville. Through 2 games, Benjamin has 44 carries for 351 yards and 4 touchdowns and 172 yards passing for Wylie East (2-0) this season.

Defensive back Matt Hankins had 5 tackles and 2 pass breakups in Flower Mound Marcus' 50-35 win over Arlington on Friday. Through 2 games, Hankins now has 10 tackles and 3 pass breakups for Marcus (1-1) this season.

Cornerback Josh Turner finished with 3 tackles and 1 pass breakup on Friday night, but saw his American Heritage team lose to St. John's by a score of 42-9. Through 2 games, Turner has 8 tackles and 3 pass breakups for American Heritage (0-2) this year.

Offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs helped Mount Vernon rack up 389 yards on offense Friday, but it was not enough as they lost to West Delaware by a score of 46-20. On defense, Wirfs had 4 tackles and 3 TFL. Through 2 games, he has 8 tackles and 5.5 TFL for Mount Vernon (0-2) this season.

Mark Kallenberger helped Bettendorf get back on the right track as he paved the way upfront for almost 500 yards of offense including 285 on the ground in their 55-0 victory over Davenport Assumption on Friday. Bettendorf is now 1-1 on the season.

Camron Harrell rushed for 1 touchdown as Bradley-Bourbonnais pulled away for a 35-19 victory over rival Kankakee on Friday night. Bradley-Bourbonnais is now 2-0 on the season and plays at Thornwood on Friday.

A.J. Epenesa's Edwardsville defense allowed the most points it has given up since 2014, but still picked up win, beating Rock Island 48-27 on Friday. Edwardsville is now 2-0 on the season and plays at Collinsville on Friday.

Jacob Coons had 3 catches for 25 yards on offense and 5 tackles and 1 sack on defense, but saw his Solon team lose to Iowa City Regina 34-0 on Friday. Through 2 games, Coons has 4 catches for 48 yards and 8 tackles and 1 sack for Solon (1-1).

Coy Kirkpatrick missed his second straight game with an ankle injury, but his Madrid team still beat Earlham by a score of 39-28. Kirkpatrick hopes to be back in the lineup this week when Madrid (2-o) hosts Panorama.

Chevin Calloway's team had a bye week. Calloway has 3 tackles and a blocked punt this season for Bishop Dunne (1-0) who next plays at Trinity Christian on September 9.
