Just when it appeared that Iowa’s 2018 recruiting class would be only one player, it grew to two on Saturday morning.

C.J. Fredrick, a 6-foot-4 guard from Park Hills, Kentucky tweeted out that he was officially committed to the Hawkeyes.

Prior to this commitment, it appeared that the Hawkeyes were full on the scholarship front. The only commitment in 2018 would be four star guard Joe Wieskamp, but now it will include Fredrick with the details to be ironed out at a later date.

“I talked to Coach McCaffery the other night and he said I could commit whenever I wanted and we would figure out the scholarship situation later,” Fredrick said Saturday. “He gave me a few scenarios that I have to think about, but I am just happy to say that I am committed to Iowa.”

The Hawkeyes have been Fredrick’s clear favorite for quite a while. Iowa offered a scholarship a year ago and had an instant link to the talented guard thanks to the fact that Fran McCaffery coached Fredrick’s uncle when he was a player at Notre Dame. Then a visit to Iowa City kind of sealed the deal in his mind.

“When I visited, I left campus and knew it was the ideal situation for me. The people at Iowa were great and I knew that’s what I wanted to be around in college and the style of play was a perfect fit as well.”

Fredrick chose Iowa over offers from Xavier, Nebraska, Miami (OH), Ball State, and others. At one time Indiana had extended a scholarship offer and he received interest from Michigan, Notre Dame, Cincinnnati, and Butler during the recruiting process.

Last season at Covington Catholic High School, Fredrick averaged over 21 points a game, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game. He also enjoyed a strong season on the AAU circuit playing for Indiana Elite’s 17’s team.

Getting the decision done prior to leaving on a family vacation was important for Fredrick. Now he can enjoy some time away without being concerned about recruiting and focus on the future.

“This is a huge sense of relief for me,” he said. “Now I can focus on continuing to improve my ball handling and overall skill development heading into my senior season.”
