Has Blackwell decided?

Rumors swirled this weekend that Florida prospect David Blackwell was ready to make his college decision and that it may be the Iowa Hawkeyes. Information, however, seemed to vary, including conflicting reports from Blackwell himself yesterday on whether or not he had committed. On Sunday, we caught up with the 6-foot-2, 207-pounder, who tore his ACL early this season, to get the latest.

"I'm not sure yet really," said Blackwell. "I guess I'm deciding between two schools, LSU and Iowa, and I have to finish talking with my coach first."

Blackwell directed any further questions to his coach, Mike Morrill, who said the last that he knew, which was on Friday, it appeared that Iowa was in the driver's seat, but the two would revisit things early this week.

"I haven't talked to David since Friday, so I really don't know if anything's happened since then," said Morrill. "The feeling that I got from the parents was that they were going to talk about it this weekend and decide. It appeared at that time that Iowa was the school of choice, but I'll see him on Monday, see what he says, and then we'll be in contact with all the schools."

With his senior season over almost as soon as it began at Ft. Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons, Blackwell hopes to wrap up his recruiting soon, so he can focus on his rehab after undergoing ACL surgery this coming week.

"He's going to have surgery on Tuesday," Morrill said. "Actually, if you look at the kid, he looks just fine walking around, but obviously the MRI shows he needs surgery, so he's going to get it done this week. Certainly, we expect him to be just as talented of an athlete in a few months as he was a few weeks ago, so it shouldn't be an issue in college."

Also a standout basketball player who earned third team all-state honors as a junior, Blackwell could be one of the most versatile athletes in the state of Florida this year. Before his injury, the only argument among recruiters was which position he might play at the college level.

"Some schools were recruiting as a running back, some as a receiver, some as a quarterback, some as a linebacker, and some as a strong safety, so that just tells you right there that he's just an all-around kid," said Morrill. "He's just a fabulous athlete."

With scholarship offers from Iowa, LSU, Arkansas, and Ole Miss, among others, it is two schools that want to start him out at quarterback, initially at least, that are the two finalists. Now, Blackwell hopes to decide between the two schools.

"Iowa likes him as a quarterback and I think that's attractive to him," Morrill said. "They've had some success at QB with kids who are good athletes, so I think that's attractive, but it's the same thing with LSU. They like him at quarterback and they're creative and do a lot of different things, so that's right up David's alley too."

Rivals.com ranks Blackwell as the No. 83 prospect in the state of Florida this year.
