The Iowa Hawkeyes are the latest program to offer rising Class of 2023 linebacker Asa Newsom from Waverly-Shell Rock High School. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Newsom earned the offer from the Iowa coaching staff after attending their camp on Sunday.

"Coach Wallace offered me and said that I looked really good moving around in drills and liked my ability to translate coaching into drilling," said Newsom. "Coach Bell was also there when I was offered and then I talked to Coach Ferentz at the end."

Newsom, who had 30 tackles on defense and 670 yards rushing on offense last year as a sophomore, was excited to hear the news from the Hawkeyes.

"I was extremely grateful and super excited," Newsom said. "It feels great to see some hard work pay off and it’s amazing to have a school like Iowa interested in me."

Overall, Iowa is the fourth offer on Newsom's list. The first came from Nebraska, where his older brother Mosai Newsom plays, and that was followed by Kansas State and South Dakota this month.

"I’m just extremely blessed and grateful," said Newsom. "This time last year I was still trying to get fully cleared from an ACL tear. I’m just super excited to get back to work and continue to work towards my goals."
