Texas wide receiver Gavin Holmes has decommitted from the Iowa Hawkeyes and reopened his recruiting. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Holmes made the announcement this afternoon after talking things over with the Iowa coaching staff last night.

"This is probably one of the toughest decisions I have ever made," Holmes said in a statement on Twitter. "And what I've learned through this whole recruiting process is that I just have to follow my gut. I wanted to be committed somewhere before the season started, and at that time, I had a great feeling about Iowa, and I thought it was the place for me."

"Having family ties, and being from Iowa I thought I found my home for the next 4 years. Unfortunately I've had a change of heart, and realized that maybe Iowa isn't my fit."

"The whole situation that happened with my brother Eno (Benjamin), and Iowa's policy and how they went out and offered a committed prospect and tried getting him to visit, when their recruits were not allowed to take visits at all just didn't sit very well with me, and I think it was handled completely wrong."

"I also realized that Iowa's offense is not my style of offense, and that they aren't going to change their system just for me. Believe me, I never thought I would have to decommit from a school again, but after talking with my family and a bunch of prayer, I have decided to reopen my recruitment and decommit from the University of Iowa."

"This is just the best decision I could make right now, for my family's, and my own sake. Thank you to the Iowa staff for believing in me, and giving me this opportunity! And another (shout out) to the fans, and the love I have received as a commit. Thank you to those who understand. No interviews please."

Holmes is the fourth recruit to decommit from the Hawkeyes in the past month, joining Eno Benjamin, Chevin Calloway, and Beau Corrales, all from the state of Texas. Iowa's recruiting class, which once sat at 17 commits, is now down to 13 following the latest news.

A three-star prospect, Holmes originally committed to Duke in May before switching to Iowa in June. During the recruiting process, he has also drawn offers from Maryland, Wisconsin, Utah, BYU, Kansas, Syracuse, Boise State, San Diego State, Tulane, Wyoming, Colorado State, and Fresno State, among others.

Holmes, who ran a 4.43 forty at The Opening regional in Dallas this past spring, finished his senior season with 83 catches for 1,549 yards and 15 touchdowns at Justin Northwest.
