A 6-foot-4, 230-pound defensive end from Dubuque Wahlert, Spencer Goerdt has been dreaming of playing for the Iowa Hawkeyes for years and had a chance to make his first recruiting visit to Iowa City on Saturday. We caught up with Goerdt afterwards to get a complete update.

Q: How was your trip to Iowa this on Saturday?

GOERDT: It was amazing. I’ve been dreaming of playing for Iowa my whole life and to get that opportunity to go there and visit was awesome.

Q: What did you get a chance to see in Iowa City?

GOERDT: We got there and ate breakfast. They gave us a tour of the facilities, their weight room, and their meeting rooms. They showed us a highlight tape. Then we got to walk in the tunnel and be on the sidelines during warmups.

Q: What did you enjoy most about the trip?

GOERDT: It was probably being on the sidelines and just seeing the guys. I was trying to put myself in their shoes and hopefully be in that position in a year.

Q: What has been the interest from Iowa?

GOERDT: I think it has mostly been through my assistant coach. It has been through him and Coach Morgan. It is not too extremely so hopefully that can get a little more consistent in the next couple of weeks.

Q: How would you feel if they offered you a walk-on spot?

GOERDT: It is my dream to play at Iowa. To get that opportunity to walk-on at Iowa is something I would probably hop on right away.

Q: How do you feel about Iowa?

GOERDT: Like I said, it is my dream to play at Iowa. It doesn’t get much better than to walk out of the tunnel in front of 70,000 people. I talked to Riley McCarron and he said that Iowa is one of the best colleges to play at. I’d like to be a part of that.

Q: What other colleges are recruiting you?

GOERDT: Probably the top two are Minnesota Mankato and Duluth right now.

Q: Do you have any offers?

GOERDT: I have a couple of NAIA schools and also those two Division II schools.

Q: What are you being recruited at by Iowa?

GOERDT: They had said defensive end but I could play offense too. I played tight end last year and then got moved to tackle this year. Anywhere they want me to play, I’d for sure play.

Q: How big are you size wise?

GOERDT: 6-foot-4, 230-pounds.

Q: How has the high school football season been going?

GOERDT: Pretty good. We had a little slow start where we had a couple of tough losses. We are just trying to hang in there and push through.
