In-state kicker visits Iowa

Mason City kicker Miguel Recinos is still looking over his college options and took an official visit to Iowa City this weekend to learn more about the Hawkeyes. We caught up with Recinos to talk about the trip, when he will make his decision, and much more.

Q: Have you made a final college decision?

RECINOS: I think I'll have my decision within the next two weeks.

Q: Do you have recruiting narrowed down at all?

RECINOS: Yeah, I have it narrowed down between Iowa and Iowa State.

Q: How was your visit this weekend to Iowa

RECINOS: I was really impressed by the staff, the players, and the dynamic between them. They were all very welcoming. I got to see the facilities and tour the campus. I was impressed with what I saw and it was the same thing at Iowa State. It will be a tough decision because I was so impressed with the coaches at both schools.

Q: What are some of the main selling points for Iowa?

RECINOS: I just believe that Iowa has always been known for turning out good kickers. They have an excellent head coach in Coach Ferentz and Coach Doyle knows what he is talking about on adding muscle mass. Academically, they have what I want to go into with the medical field and they have the medical school right there. I got to meet some of the doctors and it was a great experience.

Q: What did they say about your role there?

RECINOS: They want me to challenge for both kicking as well as punting. They just brought in a junior college punter. He'll be a junior so I'll be the only young punter they got there. For kicking, there are some other guys challenging for that position. I have to prove myself.

Q: What was the highlight of your trip?

RECINOS: I'd say it was talking with Coach Ferentz. It was interesting to hear how he began to develop a respect for special teams. We talked a lot about where he saw me fitting in. He said that the position is wide open and no one is in the lead. Everyone coming in will have a chance to fight for the starting spot.

Q: What will be the determining factors in your decision?

RECINOS: A huge portion of that will be where I feel most comfortable academically and where I will have the best chance. I want to think about which staff I like the most because I'll be there for the next four or five years. I want to say that both schools were outstanding on my visit. It is going to be a very difficult decision because of the players and the coaches are both schools.

As a senior, Recinos made 10/16 field goals with a long of 58 yards. He also connected on 18/20 PAT's and had 34 touchbacks on kickoffs. As a punter, Recinos had a 43.7 yard average.
