Clear Lake wide receiver Zach Lester has seen his recruiting go to another level in recent weeks and that included landing a preferred walk-on opportunity at the University of Iowa.

“Coach Copeland followed me on Twitter (Tuesday morning)," said Lester. "(He) messaged me and asked if I would like the opportunity to walk on.”

The attention from the Hawkeyes started recently after Lester showcased his skills in front of another member of the staff.

“Coach Morgan came to a basketball practice and told me he was very impressed with my athleticism.”

Lester likes what he has seen so far with the Iowa program.

“I feel like they have a great tradition and it is an honor to be recruited by them.”

Another in-state school is also showing Lester a lot of attention along with programs for another sport.

“I have a preferred walk-on spot at Iowa State for football, and I have full rides from NIACC, DMACC and Iowa Lakes for basketball.”

Lester knows when he wants to have the recruiting process wrapped up.

“I want to decide by the end of February.”

At this point, Lester is unsure which sport he wants to play at the college level.

“Not yet," Lester said. "I’m still trying to figure it out.”

Lester has one visit on his schedule at this point.

“I am visiting Iowa State this Saturday.”

Iowa City is a place that Lester is working on getting an opportunity to see before deciding.

“I haven’t yet, but I’m hoping to visit Iowa before I make my decision.”

Lester knows what will eventually help him pick his final destination.

“The biggest factors for me are the environment of the school and just trusting my gut.”

Growing up, Lester kept a close eye on both in-state programs.

“I liked both Iowa and Iowa State growing up.”
