Lewis looking forward to Iowa visit

One of the top quarterbacks in the Midwest will be on campus at the University of Iowa this weekend. Sean Lewis of Oak Lawn Richards High School in Illinois will be making an unofficial visit to Iowa City Friday, August 8th. The 6-foot-7, 220-pound Lewis is a former high school teammate of one of the top prospects in Iowa’s 2003 recruiting class, freshman offensive lineman Mike Jones.

In his 2002 season, Lewis completed 134 of 274 passes for 2,178 yards and 27 touchdowns with only three interceptions. In Richards’ wide-open offense, he also rushed for over 500 yards and nine additional scores. Following the season, he was named All Area and All Conference.

Lewis currently holds offers from Iowa, Wisconsin, Purdue, Northwestern, Bowling Green, and Northern Illinois. According to the quarterback, the Iowa offer is the latest one and just recently arrived in the mail.

“They offered a week and a half ago, I just got the formal letter. The head coach (Kirk Ferentz) said he saw my tape, was sorry it took so long but he was really impressed and wanted to get me on campus to show me what they have to offer.”

The visit to Iowa will conclude a busy schedule for Lewis, as he has already been to both Purdue and Wisconsin earlier this week. What all do they have planned for his Iowa visit?

“I’m going for a full tour,” said Lewis. “Then I’ll get to see them practice too.”

When asked about the connection with current Hawkeye Mike Jones, Lewis explained, “It helps. I’ll get an insider's point of view. He can tell me how things are run and if he’s happy with his decision.”

Lewis has been timed at 4.65 in the forty and has recorded a 32” vertical jump. According to him, his athleticism is one of several things that college coaches like about him as a quarterback.

“They like my size and my mobility - they said they’re real impressed with my mobility and my confidence on the field,” said Lewis. “I don’t shy away from hits and they like my arm strength too.”

Lewis plans to graduate from high school at semester this year and enroll in college in January of 2004. In doing so, he will be allowed to participate in spring practice next year at his ultimate college destination. Enrolling early means Lewis will have to make his decision a bit earlier than most in his class. According to him, that decision could be right around the corner.

“After this week, I’m going to sit down with my folks and re-evaluate everything. I’ll probably make a decision early to mid-September.”
