McCaffery on Wichita State win

After a pair of close losses, Iowa's trip to Orlando finished on a high note as the Hawkeyes dominated Wichita State from beginning to end on Sunday in the Advocare Invitational. Following the victory over the Shockers, Fran McCaffery, Mike Gesell, and Adam Woodbury talked about the win.

McCAFFERY: We put two pretty good halves defensive together. I was really impressed with that. I thought we moved the ball and took care of the ball. They got a few offensive rebounds in the second half in that one stretch. You can't let this team dominate the glass. They got 19 in each of the last two games and that creates problems for you, especially when they are getting into their press. I thought we did a great job on the glass.
Q: On when they made their rally in the second half.
McCAFFERY: What you don't want to do there is turn it over. We executed our offense and got good shot opportunities. Nobody panicked on offense and we made enough shots to win the game. There was no panic. We have veterans and we have guys that aren't going to wilt. They were sending five to the glass, shooting long shots that were bouncing all over the place. We had a couple of foul the three point shooter situations that enabled them to get to the line and then get into their press and for the most part they were making their free throws. I am really happy with how our guys withstood the run.
Q: What do you learn about your team in a game and a tournament like this?
McCAFFERY: I think you learn a lot about the toughness of your team and kind of where you are. If we are going to make progress and what we need to do. We played three really good teams, well coached teams, and relatively short preps. You have to be able to process the information and execute the game plan and give your team a chance to win. We had two great comebacks after we got behind. We learned from why we got behind and today we got out ahead and we stayed there and I think that is a sign of a really good team.
Q TO MIKE GESELL: What did you learn at this tournament?
GESELL: I think we learned what we need to do to win. We played three very good teams. That is what we want to do. We want to play the best competition any time of the year. That's where you can get better and learn things about your team. I was very proud of my teammates. We lost two tough ones and then coming back today and beating a very good Wichita State team.
Q: TO ADAM WOODBURY: You had a pretty good tournament. How do you feel you played?
WOODBURY: I feel like I had a few turnovers today that I would like to have back. I made some mistakes down the stretch that I would like to have back. I just try to play my game. I am trying to do everything I can to help my team win and be successful. That is what I have tried to do in my four year career. Any time we win it's a good game for me.
Q: Any other guys in particular stand out for you in this tournament?
McCAFFERY: Obviously for us you sort of expect what you get from the first five. What do we get after that? I thought in particular of that group, the way Peter battled back after some foul trouble, especially in that run, he was really good. I thought Nicholas Baer was spectacular. He had a great weekend. Brady Ellingson gave us a huge lift. Dale Jones hits a big three in the first half, so I am really pleased with those guys.
