Newsom excited about Iowa offer
Class of 2019 defensive end Mosai Newsom from Waverly-Shell Rock left Iowa City with an offer in hand from the Hawkeyes on Sunday. Afterwards, we caught up with the talented 6-foot-5, 245-pound Newsom to talk about the new opportunity, his visits to Iowa and Minnesota this weekend, and much more.
Q: How was your trip to Iowa today?
NEWSOM: It was really good. I got to see the practice and see their first day of camp. I enjoyed it a lot.
Q: What was your schedule during the day?
NEWSOM: First, we got there and I met with Coach Doyle and Coach Ferentz. Then we went into the position meetings and then ate. Then we went out and watched them practice.
Q: When did the offer from the Iowa coaches come?
NEWSOM: It was towards the beginning. Coach Ferentz called me into his office and we sat down and talked.
Q: What was discussed during that conversation?
NEWSOM: They just talked about my performance at their camp earlier and what they thought about me as a player. It went well.
Q: When the offer came, what were the first thoughts going through your head?
NEWSOM: I just thanked God right away. It is a blessing. I feel like I’ve been putting in the work. Everything happens for a reason. I have stuck to that and my parents are preaching that. It is amazing. It is awesome.
Q: How do you feel about Iowa overall?
NEWSOM: Obviously it is the state school. I think it is awesome. I enjoy the school but I am keeping my options open. I still got a lot of time.
Q: What is your vision of the perfect time to decide?
NEWSOM: I don’t know for sure. I know that I will sit down with my parents and talk. They have been helping me through everything and they have done a great job of it.
Q: Is there any potential for you to decide soon?
NEWSOM: I don’t think that there will be anything any time soon.
Q: How do you feel about the coaches at Iowa?
NEWSOM: Really good. I am getting to know everyone a lot better. I am building that relationship and that is a big thing.
Q: How was the actual practice?
NEWSOM: It was good and I really liked it. It was really similar to their camp, which I enjoyed. There are a lot of new stuff and it was good. I did really like seeing what they do there.
Q: What was your favorite part of the trip?
NEWSOM: Obviously I liked receiving the offer. It was amazing and a blessing but I liked getting into the position meetings. I took a lot away from that with techniques and things that I can use in my game.
Q: How was your Minnesota trip earlier in the weekend?
NEWSOM: It was good. I had a lot of fun there. It was just doing the same thing in building relationships with their coaches. It was good.
Q: Do you have a favorite at this point?
NEWSOM: I do not have a favorite right now.
