As Iowa’s first commitment in the Class of 2017, offensive lineman Coy Kirkpatrick has had the future Hawkeye tag for almost two years. Now, the 6-foot-5, 285-pound Kirkpatrick, who will wear #71 at Iowa, gets to start living that dream as he reports to campus next month for summer workouts with the team. We caught up with Kirkpatrick to talk about making the transition to college and much more.

Q: When do you make the move to Iowa City this summer?

KIRKPATRICK: June 10th is when I will move in.

Q: What are you looking forward to in starting workouts with the team?

KIRKPATRICK: I'm really excited to get to work with my future teammates and be around all of them and get to know them better.

Q: What are your goals for your freshman year? Are you hoping to play or expecting to redshirt?

KIRKPATRICK: I am redshirting my first year so I can get to know the game better and go into the next year stronger and faster.

Q: What was it like visiting spring practice last month now that you are so close to being there?

KIRKPATRICK: Time flies by. It seemed so real knowing I will be there in just a year. It was a great experience.

Q: What will it mean to you to walk out of the tunnel at Kinnick Stadium for the first time?

KIRKPATRICK: It gives my goosebumps right now, so I can't imagine what it will be like actually walking out of the tunnel.

Q: When you look back at everything, what was it about Iowa that made it the right place for you?

KIRKPATRICK: From the moment I met the staff and saw the new facilities, I knew it was the place I needed to be. I don't regret one thing in my recruiting process. I'm proud to be a Hawkeye.

Q: Lastly, I have to ask about track quick. What was it like to beat your dad’s long time school record in the discus this year?

KIRKPATRICK: It was one of the coolest and memorable moments in my life. It took a lot of hard work and perseverance and I'm very glad to leave a mark in the track and field section at Madrid.

A three-star prospect, Kirkpatrick committed to Iowa way back on June 19, 2015, choosing the Hawkeyes over a scholarship offer from Iowa State.
