Early on in the recruiting process, it appeared that Trey Creamer would be playing against the Hawkeyes. The Georgia native initially picked Minnesota, but found a better fit when he committed late in the recruiting process to Iowa. We caught up with Creamer to talk about his future position with the Hawkeyes and starting to training this month with an NFL All Pro as he prepares to arrive in Iowa City in June.

Q: What have you been up to on the sports front? Have you been participating in track or just focused on football training?

CREAMER: I just finished up track. I didn’t qualify for state this year, which was a bummer. Now I am just focused on working out and getting stronger.

Q: What did you run in track this year and what kind of numbers did you post?

CREAMER: My main event was the long jump and my best was 21 feet 7 inches in that event. If I had gotten to 21 feet 9 inches, I would have gotten to state. I ran the 400 this year and posted a 50.4 in that this year. I also ran the 200 in 23.9. I also did the 4 x 400 and the 4 x 100 relays.

Q: Now it’s on to football training for you. Have you been working on the program Iowa sent you?

CREAMER: During the track season, I just focused on that. I didn’t really work on the lower body exercises because I didn’t want to keep my legs fresh when I was jumping. In the morning I start working out with an NFL player and one of my teammates from school.

Q: Who is the NFL player that you will be working out with?

CREAMER: Vic Beasley. He is from around here. Everyone around here is like family and I am close to his relatives down here. We will be working out at 3 a.m.

Q: How long do those workouts run for you?

CREAMER: I think close to two hours. I don’t know exactly what we will be doing, but I am ready for it.

Q: You are wrapping up your time in high school shortly. Are you getting excited to get to Iowa City?

CREAMER: I have been ready to get to Iowa City since I committed. Honestly, I was ready to go back the minute I left from my visit. I can’t wait to get there to be with my brothers, compete, have fun, and win football games.

Q: As you reflect back on the recruiting process, what did you learn during that time?

CREAMER: First of all, it was a blessing to be recruited by any school. Iowa stuck out to me the most because their approach was always calm, cool, and collected. It felt like home when I was there. That might be crazy to say because it is so far from a small town in Georgia. It’s a big jump, but I am excited about it. I hope I have a chance to play early and help them win games.

Q: Was there one person who stuck out to you in your recruitment to Iowa that might have helped the Hawkeyes the most?

CREAMER: I don’t know if there was one individual, but talking to Coach Ferentz and talking to guys like Akrum Wadley really helped me. My future roommate, Ihmir Smith-Marsette and I became very close on our visit to Iowa as well. That helped.

Q: When are you going to be arriving in Iowa City?

CREAMER: We have to report for workouts on June 12th. I get there on June 10th and my family is coming up with me so we can say our goodbyes there before I get started.

Q: Dropping a child off at college is an emotional moment for a parent. Will it be emotional for you too?

CREAMER: It is, but at the same time, I think it’s time for me to get away too. I know the first year in college is going to be tough because there will be times you miss home, but you have to battle through that. I don’t see any reason that I will need to come home. I love Georgia, but I don’t see coming back any time soon. I just want to stay in Iowa, get to work, and perfect my craft, and hopefully play.

Q: What craft will you be perfecting at Iowa? Will it be at wide receiver or cornerback?

CREAMER: (laugh) That’s going to be up to the coaches. Wherever they feel comfortable with me is where I will play. They have talked to me about playing some at wide receiver and some at defensive back. I guess whatever side of the ball they need me is where I will be. I just want to find a home and be the best I can be at that position, do my best, and help the team.

Q: Is the early path to playing time that matters most to you right now or does that even matter at all?

CREAMER: Really it’s whatever side they see being the best fit for me. I enjoy playing corner, but I also enjoy having the ball in my hands and making plays that way too. It’s really kind of a toss-up. I could also be in the mix for punt and kickoff return and I could still play defensive back and do that too. I just want to play at the end of the day and help win football games.

Q: What number will you be wearing?

CREAMER: I had talked to them about wearing #7. Not 100% sure on that and part of that might be whether I am on the offensive or defensive side of the ball. That is the number I hope to be wearing.

Q: What are you looking forward to most about being a Hawkeye?

CREAMER: I am looking forward to being a part of the tradition of Iowa football. It’s a family atmosphere there and I look forward to being with my teammates and the coaches. I know it will be a change for me being from the south, but I am looking forward to being a Hawkeye and I can’t wait to learn about it.
