Top hoops junior visits Iowa

In every recruiting class there is a player who comes out of nowhere each summer and shoots up the charts like a rocket. This past summer that player in the 2007 class was Robbie Hummel from Valparaiso, Indiana. The 6-foot-7 forward went from not being on anyone's radar to picking up interest and offers from many high D1 schools, including Iowa, where he camped in June. This past week, Hummel made a trip to Iowa City to take in Iowa's game against Drake.

"It was a good visit. I didn't get to see much of Iowa City because it took us about seven hours to get there because traffic was crazy on 1-80 coming over, but it was a good time. I enjoyed the game and had a chance to visit with the coaches afterwards," Hummel said.

This past summer, Hummel attended the Iowa Elite Camp and played outstanding. He likes what he has seen of Iowa and what he has heard from the coaches.

"I like Coach Alford a lot and the school as well. Iowa seems like it is a really nice place."

That performance at the Iowa Elite Camp was just the beginning for the junior forward as he went from unknown to known in the matter of a couple of months.

"It has been pretty crazy for me. I have gone from not even being ranked in the state to be highly ranked nationally. I think I have improved as a shooter and that has helped me a lot," he said.

Hummel is currently ranked by Rivals.com as the 60th best prospect in the 2007 class, regardless of position, and has had offers pouring in from around the country.

"Right now I have offers from Iowa, Indiana, Purdue, Northwestern, Xavier, Nebraska, Miami, and Charlotte. I don't really have any favorites right now and I plan to take my time and make a decision probably at the end of next summer," Hummel said.
