Wegher talks about his decision

With over one hundred Sioux City Heelan fans and several members of the media in attendance, four-star running back Brandon Wegher announced his college decision on Saturday night. The 5-foot-11, 206-pound Wegher is headed to play football at the University of Iowa next year.

The Sioux City native, who chose Iowa over scholarship offers from Nebraska, Kansas, Penn State, Auburn, Missouri, Arkansas, Iowa State, and a number of others, talked about his decision shortly after making it public.

Q: When did you make the phone call to Coach Ferentz?

WEGHER: I talked to Coach Ferentz yesterday (Friday).

Q: What was his reaction when you told him?

WEGHER: He asked me, "Are you serious?" And I told him, "Yeah I am."

Q: Have you talked to Coach Erb yet?

WEGHER: No, I've tried to call him a couple of times but I haven't been able to get hold of him, but I'm sure Coach Ferentz passed the word along to him.

Q: You've had an all-star lineup of schools recruiting you including Nebraska, Auburn, Kansas. With names like that, and the choice of Iowa over those schools, what was the one single most important factor that made you want to be a Hawkeye?

WEGHER: I'd have to say the running back situation. But there's a lot of factors - the running back situation, the coaches, it's just great down there. They recruited me the hardest. I love it down there. It's the best fit.

Q: Your coach talked about the circus it's been from his perspective. Does it feel good to have the choice to be a Hawkeye behind you?

WEGHER: Oh yeah. It was a lot of pressure, but now I can concentrate on the upcoming season.

Q: When did you actually make the final decision?

WEGHER: Well, the whole family got together Wednesday and we talked about it and I made the decision.

Q: What kind of promise can you make the Hawkeye fans about how you're going to when you get there?

WEGHER: Well, I don't think I can make any promises other than I'll do the best I can and try to contribute to the team.

Q: You had a lot of attention throughout this process, how did you handle it?

WEGHER: It was a little hard but really I just kind of blew it off. Probably the most important thing was my team being there. I've got to say thanks to them and my coaches - Coach Jansen, Coach Steffen, and my strength coach, Zach Mathers.
