Four-star safety Xavier Nwankpa, the top ranked player in the state of Iowa, was on campus in Iowa City this past weekend for a two-day unofficial visit with the Hawkeyes. We caught up with the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Southeast Polk star afterwards to discuss the trip, what comes next in his recruiting, and much more.

Q: What stood out to you about this visit to Iowa City?

NWANKPA: Sitting down with Coach Parker and Coach Wallace and seeing how they coach and coach down to the little details that all in the end help you play faster.

Q: Which players did you get to hang out with and how did you feel like you fit in?

NWANKPA: Guys I knew like Gavin Williams, Arland Bruce, Reggie Bracy, and Andrew Lentsch. Guys like that I've been close with, so I fit in well and then also met guys like Dane Belton and Tyler Goodson.

Q: What coaches did you get to spend time with and what was their message?

NWANKPA: Coach Niemann, Coach Wallace, Coach Ferentz, Coach Parker, and Tyler Barnes. They were just excited I was down to visit and want me to take time with my decision to make sure I'm making the best choice, but the impact I could make on the Iowa scene would be something that's never happened before.

Q: What's next for you recruiting wise? Will there be a decision this summer or waiting until the fall?

NWANKPA: I'll wait till the fall so I get a chance to use my last two officials and take some game day visits.

In May, Nwankpa narrowed his list of 30 scholarship offers down to seven finalists, which are Iowa, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Clemson, LSU, and Arizona State. This month, he has made official visits to Ohio State, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, and an unofficial visit to Iowa.
