30 in a Row: Iowa Wrestlers Crush ISU 34-7
IOWA WRESTLING HAWKEYES WIN 30TH CONSECUTIVE DUAL OVER IOWA STATE, 34-7
IOWA CITY, IA -- The University of Iowa wrestling team defeated intra-state rival Iowa State, 34-7, Sunday afternoon in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. A crowd of 7,478 witnessed the Hawkeyes win their 30th consecutive dual over the Cyclones.
Iowa junior Luke Eustice started things off with an 18-7 major decision over Iowa State's Grant Nakamura at 125 pounds. Hawkeye junior Cliff Moore won his 50th career match with an 8-3 decision over Zach Roberson at 133.
The Cyclones put their first points on the board with Aaron Holker's 14-0 major decision over Hawkeye senior Luke Moffitt at 141, but Iowa struck back with redshirt freshman Ty Eustice beating Nate Gallick, 3-2 at 149, and senior Matt Anderson scoring a
12-4 major decision over Nels Matson at 157.
Iowa State won the 165-pound match with Nick Passolano scoring a 6-1 decision over Jason D'Agata, but the Hawkeyes rebounded scoring team bonus points in the last four matches. Junior Tyler Nixt started the run with a 19-6 major decision over Ken Cook at 174, winning his 60th career match. Senior Jessman Smith improved his undefeated record to 8-0 with an 11-3 major decision over Austen Palmer at 184.
At 197, junior Ryan Fulsaas pinned Woodley Milord in 5:55 and heavyweight Steve Mocco remains undefeated at 8-0 after accepting a forfeit to end the dual.
In other action, four Hawkeyes placed at Saturday's UNI Open in Cedar Falls. Sophomore Matt Shankey placed second at 125, redshirt freshman Paul Bradley placed fourth at 197, and sophomore Trent Goodale (133) and redshirt freshman Joe Johnston (157) placed sixth. Former Hawkeye NCAA Champion T.J. Williams won the 157-pound class while competing for the Hawkeye Wrestling Club.
Iowa (4-0, 0-0 in the Big Ten) will face Northern Iowa (0-2) Friday at 7 p.m. in the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.
