One of the things Hayden Fry was famous for was breaking the stranglehold the Big Two of Michigan and Ohio State had on the Big Ten.
Even though the modern Hawkeyes have enjoyed more success against the Wolverines, the Buckeyes have also been intertwined in some great games in Iowa football over the last 25 years
November 14, 1987 at Columbus - Iowa fans were hugging their radios as Chuck Hartlieb completed 20 of 37 passes for 333 yards including the game winner to Marv Cook from 28 yards out with sixteen seconds left for the 29-27 win. That was the first passing TD OSU had allowed in fourteen quarters.
November 2, 1991 at Columbus - With black helmets shorn of all stickers to honor the victims of a fatal campus shooting back in Iowa City, another Hartlieb led the Hawks to a big win, 16-9. Jim Hartlieb came off of the bench for an injured Matt Rodgers and protected the 13-9 lead.
Rodgers was hot that day going 20 of 27 for 258 yards and a 61 yard TD to TE Alan Cross.
Of course, there was a rainy loss by #1 Iowa (wrap your mind around that one - #1 Iowa!) in Columbus back in 1985.
And let’s not forget a time when OSU won, and the Hawks benefited - 1981! Art Schlichter leads the Bucks to a come from behind win over Michigan propelling Iowa to its first Rose Bowl in eons.
1964 looked like the Hawkeyes might be back to their old winning ways under Jerry Burns. In 1963 the Hawks had finished 3-3-2 (2-3-1). The season ender against Notre Dame had been cancelled because of the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
The '64 Hawks were led by the pitch and catch duo of Gary Snook and Karl Noonan. And the first three games saw the Hawks on a roll with wins over Idaho (34-24), Washington (28-18) and Indiana (21-20).
However a trip to Camp Randall stopped the Hawk train as Bucky beat Iowa (31-21) despite ten receptions and a TD for Noonan. Next week Snook and Noonan had another big day as Snook attempted 49 passes, connecting on 26 including ten more to Noonan, but still Iowa fell to Purdue (19-14).
The Hawks fought bravely against the Buckeyes on Halloween day in 1964, but succumbed to OSU 21-19.
Unfortunately, those games were just the start as Iowa went on a six game losing streak to finish ninth in the Big Ten at 1-5.
Obviously, offense wasn’t the problem as the Hawks set ten conference records and tied two others. Most by Snook and/or Noonan.
Some small tidbits of interest:
-Former All-American QB Randy Duncan, did the color along with Jim Zabel for WHO broadcasts. Ron Shoop and Bud Sobel did the play by play for KRNT.
-A “definitive” history of Iowa’s 75 year football history was penned by Dick Lamb and Bert McGrane.
-I Club memberships went for $10 a year.
-Karl Noonan earned first team All-American honors at WR from NEA and Football Digest. Noonan also earned second team honors from AP while guard, John Niland was a second teamer according to the NEA.
-Noonan, in no big shock was the team MVP. Tony Giacabozzi was team captain. Snook and Noonan were first team all Big Ten.
Starting Lineup for Iowa on 10/31/64.
