This week's featured game program is from November 3, 1979.

Purdue is a quarterback factory.

First it was Len Dawson and then the great Bob Griese. Later came Mark Hermann, Mike Phipps, Gary Danielson, Jim Everett, Drew Brees and now an Iowa boy, Kyle Orton.

In 1979, Mark Hermann’s Boilermakers came to town to face off against the Iowa Hawkeyes and their new coach, Hayden Fry.

Purdue was 6-2 coming in with losses at UCLA and Minnesota. The Hawks were only 4-4, but had won four of the previous five after starting out 0-3. Dennis Mosley was on his way to a 1,000 yard rushing season as he led Iowa with 956 yards and eight touchdowns at time. The Hawks were quarterbacked by fifth year senior, Phil Suess, father of current Cedar Rapids Washington QB prospect, Warren Suess.

Unfortunately, the Hawks were started on a two game losing skid by Purdue, 20-14. Iowa would go to Columbus and get blown out 34-7 before returning to Kinnick Stadium to face Michigan State. With the first .500 Big Ten record in many years hanging in the balance, the Hawks rallied from a 16-13 deficit to beat Sparty 33-23.

The big news for Hawkeye fans was on the hard court where the Hawkeye cagers were coming off of a Big Ten co-championship. All-American Ronnie Lester (18.7 ppg, 5.3 assists) returned as did Kevin Boyle who received all-Big Ten honors as a freshman. Lute Olson was the 1979 coach of the year.

Hopes were high for the 79-80 Hawkeyes. :)
