Angerer and Greene honored by the Big Ten

IOWA CITY - - University of Iowa running back Shonn Greene and linebacker Pat Angerer have been named Big Ten Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. The announcement came today from the Big Ten office.
This announcement marks the first time, since the weekly awards were initiated in 1987, that Iowa players earned offensive and defensive honors, the same week.

The awards came following their outstanding performances in helping Iowa reclaim the Heartland Trophy in a 38-16 victory over Wisconsin last Saturday.
Greene, a junior from Sicklerville, NJ, outscored the Badgers by himself, scoring 24 points with four rushing touchdowns while rushing for 217 yards on 25 carries. His four rushing scores (12, 34, 34 and 52) and 24 points equaled school records and matched the Kinnick Stadium records, by an Iowa player. Greene's 34-yard touchdown in the second quarter pushed him over 1,000 rushing yards for the season. He became the 12th Hawkeye, and second-fastest, to reach 1,000 yards.
Greene's 217 yards ties Nick Bell for the sixth-most rushing yards in a single-game in school history. The junior has topped the century mark eight-straight games and nine times in his career. He is the first Hawkeye to ever eclipse 100 yards in eight-straight contests. Furthermore, he is the only Football Bowl Subdivision running back to rush for over 100 yards the first eight games this season. This marks the first weekly Big Ten honor of Greene's career. The last Hawkeye to win the offensive award was Ed Hinkel on Nov. 21, 2005.
Angerer, a native of Bettendorf, posted career highs in tackles (16) and interceptions (2) against the Badgers. Twelve of his game-high 16 tackles came in the first half. The junior helped secure the victory with a pair of four-quarter thefts, returning them 19 yards. Both interceptions led to 10 Hawkeye points. The 16 tackles are the most by an Iowa player since Mike Humpal registered 18 vs. Michigan State in a double-overtime contest Oct. 27, 2007. This marks the first weekly conference honor of Angerer's career.
Greene and Angerer become the third and fourth Hawkeyes to earn a Big Ten weekly award this season. WR Andy Brodell earned special teams accolades after the Iowa State game and DT Karl Klug picked up defensive honors after the Florida International contest.
The Iowa Hawkeyes are idle this week and will look for their third-straight win at Illinois on Nov. 1.
From the Big Ten Conference:
OFFENSE:
Shonn Greene, Iowa
JR, RB, Sicklerville, N.J./Milford Academy (Conn.)
Greene broke loose for a career-high 217 yards on 25 carries (8.7 avg.) and equaled a school record with four touchdowns to lead Iowa past Wisconsin and also become the first player in NCAA Division I history to top 100 rushing yards in each of the first eight games of a season. The junior running back's 217-yard effort is tied for the sixth-best single-game effort in program annals and marks the first 200-yard outing by a Hawkeyes player since 2005, when Albert Young collected 202 yards at Northwestern. Greene led Iowa to a quick start with scoring runs of 12 and 34 yards to stake the hosts to a 14-0 lead in the second quarter. After the Badgers cut the deficit to 14-9, he sprinted 52 yards for another touchdown in the third period and added a 34-yard scoring gallop at the start of the fourth quarter to put the game away. He is the first Hawkeye to score four rushing touchdowns in a single game since Tavian Banks accomplished the feat against Iowa State in 1997. Greene also surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for the season, becoming the second-fastest Iowa rusher to crack the mark behind Banks, who reached 1,000 yards in six games in 1997. Greene collects his first career player of the week accolade and the first for a Hawkeyes' offensive player since the 2005 campaign.
LAST IOWA OFFENSIVE POW: WR Ed Hinkel on Nov. 21, 2005.
DEFENSE:
Pat Angerer, Iowa
JR, LB, Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf
Angerer established a career high with 16 tackles and added two interceptions to lead an Iowa defense that held Wisconsin without a touchdown until late in the fourth quarter. The junior linebacker amassed 12 tackles in the first half alone, and his 16-tackle effort marks the most defensive stops in a single game by any Big Ten player this season. With the hosts holding a 28-9 lead heading into the fourth quarter, Angerer picked off passes to end back-to-back Badgers' drives to put the game away. He returned his first interception 14 yards to give Iowa the ball at Wisconsin's 48-yard line, which the offense turned into a touchdown four plays later for a 35-9 advantage. The Iowa native picked off his second pass on the ensuing possession and returned it five yards to the Badgers' 37-yard line, setting up a field goal and a 38-9 lead. Angerer picks up the first weekly laurel of his career.
LAST IOWA DEFENSIVE POW: DE Karl Klug on Sept. 8, 2008.
SPECIAL TEAMS:
Kevin Kelly, Penn State
SR, K, Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy
Kelly connected on three field goals and all five of his extra points against Michigan to become the Big Ten's career leader in kicking points. The senior kicker's 14-point outing boosted his career total to 376 kicking points to pass Minnesota's Dan Nystrom (1999-2002) and Iowa's Nate Kaeding (2000-03), who shared the top spot with 367 points. Kelly connected on field goals of 42, 32 and 20 yards to give him 70 career field goals, which ranks third in conference annals behind Nystrom (71 field goals) and Ohio State's Mike Nugent (72). Kelly earns his first career weekly award.
LAST PSU SPECIAL TEAMS POW: KR Derrick Williams on Sept. 29, 2008.
