Davis talks in-depth about his decision

Ever since Iowa offered him a scholarship during his sophomore year, four-star wide receiver Keenan Davis has had the Hawkeyes at the top of his list. Today, the 6-foot-3, 200-pound Davis decided not to wait any longer and made his verbal commitment to Kirk Ferentz and the coaching staff. Davis talks in-depth about his decision, recruiting other players, and more.

Q: It sounds like you have some news, is that right?

DAVIS: Yeah. I committed to Iowa.

Q: How did it all happen today if you can take us through it?

DAVIS: About 15 minutes ago, I called Coach Ferentz and told him the news. Then I talked to all the other coaches and they were really excited.

Q: What did you tell Coach Ferentz when you gave him the news?

DAVIS: I called him and he asked how things were, and I told him really good. Then I was like, "Well, Coach I've been thinking and I really want to commit to Iowa." Then he was real excited and I talked to all the other coaches.

Q: Coach Campbell and everybody basically?

DAVIS: Yeah. I talked to Coach Campbell and he kind of screamed. He was real excited.

Q: What were some of your main reasons for picking Iowa?

DAVIS: I really wanted to be close to home and it's 20 minutes away, so my family can come see me whenever they want. I just feel really comfortable with all of the coaches. I have a good relationship with every single one of them and I think I'll fit in on the team really well.

Q: Have you gotten pretty close to the coaches since they offered?

DAVIS: Yeah. When I was a sophomore and they offered me, I went there to visit and talked to all the coaches and we hit it off right away. Then I've just been visiting Iowa a lot, I think maybe seven times, and I really enjoy all the coaches. They're really good people.

Q: How about the timing? What made you want to do it right now?

DAVIS: I just thought why wait if I already know, and that way I can just focus on the season pretty much.

Q: Obviously, there has been a lot in the news about some of the off the field problems the team has had. How did you look at that and did the coaches address it?

DAVIS: To me, I just think those are really dumb mistakes. I'm sure if all of those players could have that chance again, they wouldn't do it. I don't think the coaches did anything wrong, it was just some bad decisions by some players.

Q: How long have you kind of known it's going to be Iowa for sure?

DAVIS: Well, after Jordan Cotton committed, I talked to him and I started thinking about it more. I've always wanted to be close to my family, so this last week I've been like why wait.

Q: So you've been staying in touch with Cotton?

DAVIS: Yeah, he talked to me right after he committed.

Q: Are you two hoping to help add a couple more recruits?

DAVIS: Yeah, hopefully we'll get Brandon Wegher up here. I'm disappointed David Barrent went to Michigan State.

Q: Then you have a teammate Iowa has already started recruiting for 2010, right?

DAVIS: Yeah, Andre Dawson. I think I know where he's going to go. Me personally, I think he's going to want to go to Iowa, but he's got a long time to decide.

Q: What do you think about him as a player?

DAVIS: When he got moved up, the first scrimmage we had he was getting hit pretty hard, but he ended up being phenomenal. He's just a really strong player and fast. Once he gets some work on catching the ball and a few things, I think he's going to be a great D1 player.

Q: You guys have had some success doing some 7-on-7 this summer it sounds like.

DAVIS: Yeah, we went 9-0 in Chicago. We played Bolingbrook and some of the big schools from the Chicago area.

Q: Coming in, obviously your team has a lot of potential this year. Was part of it getting your recruiting done now before you start the season?

DAVIS: Yeah. I just really want to focus on my season and trying to win state. I don't want to have any distractions that would affect that.

Q: Going back to Coach Campbell, how big of a role did he play in your recruiting since he was hired this year?

DAVIS: I remember I visited Coach Campbell the first day he was in the office and we had a long conversation where I really got to know him. I found out that his dad actually coached my dad in high school track, so that was a really good family connection. He's just an outgoing guy and I really like being around him. I know he can make me a really good player.

Q: What have you seen from him in visiting practice?

DAVIS: I went in and listened to a receivers meeting and he knows everything you can know. He's asking what you did wrong and showing every little thing you could have done. I just know working with him that I can be a great player.

Q: Can you kind of sum up your feelings this weekend making your commitment?

DAVIS: I'm just relieved. I feel really happy about the decision and I'm really comfortable with it. It's been a good weekend.
