When you are the son of a former Hawkeye and former NBA player, you are going to generate plenty of attention.

That’s perfectly fine for Kareem Earl, the son of former Iowa standout Acie Earl. While the 2024 prospect lacks the towering height of his father, the younger Earl stands 6-foot-4 and says that doctors expect him to grow to 6-foot-6 in the next few years.

Right now he’s hoping his improving play on the basketball court will generate scholarship offers during the month of July.

“My AAU coach with the Barnstormers has been help me get my name out there,” Earl said. “The big thing for me is to get into the gym and continue to work on my game and get better.”

Earl has heard from Iowa, Iowa State, Marquette, Drake, and Clemson. While none of the schools have extended a scholarship offer, he hopes that will change in the next month.

“I feel like I am playing well and the coaches have said they will be watching during July.”

As far as Iowa’s interest, McCaffery’s youngest son, Jack, plays on the same high school team, so Fran McCaffery is frequently in the stands watching and, of course, evaluating.

“I’m from Iowa City and play for Iowa City West, so they see me there,” he said. “Plus we go to Iowa games regularly during the season and when I was younger I went to the Iowa basketball camp every year.”

As Earl navigates the basketball recruiting process, he says he leans on his father for advice and counsel.

“My dad has a lot of basketball connections, so he helps me out there. He also will give me advice, but he never puts pressure on me, which I appreciate.”

After this weekend playing with his high school team, Earl will be back on the AAU circuit with the Iowa Barnstormers playing in Atlanta, Omaha, Kanas City, and Minneapolis.
