Godfrey Commits to Iowa

The Iowa staff received a verbal commitment today from Texas defensive back Charles Godfrey. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Godfrey attends Baytown Lee High School and is the brother of Kansas State quarterback Ell Roberson. Hawkeye freshman quarterback Drew Tate also hails from Baytown Lee, where his step father, Dick Olin, is the head football coach.

After meeting with Iowa defensive backs coach Phil Parker this morning, Godfrey decided he wanted to be a Hawkeye.

“He met with Coach Parker this morning and said he wanted to come to Iowa. Charles was very happy with his decision and plans to be a Hawkeye,” said Olin.

As a native Iowan who dreamed of playing for the Hawkeyes, Coach Olin will now have two of his high school players in Iowa uniforms in 2004.

“I guess if I could not run out there in the black and gold, then I can have some of my guys who can,” Olin said.

Godfrey is ranked by Rivals.com as a two-star prospect and had recently narrowed his choices down to Iowa and Missouri. He took an official visit to Iowa the first weekend of December and made a trip to Missouri this past weekend. Godfrey was also offered by TCU, Texas A&M, and Kansas State according to Olin.

In making his decision, Godfrey becomes the 14th commitment in the Class of 2004 for the Iowa staff and the third verbal in the past two days.

Please stay tuned to Hawkeye Report, as we plan to catch up with Godfrey tonight to get his comments on his decision to become a Hawkeye.
