Four-star quarterback Spencer Petras is headed to Iowa. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound California native made the call late last night and committed to the Hawkeyes after visiting Iowa City last weekend and weighing his options the past few days.
"I feel that I am a great fit for the program," said Petras. "I love the people, the program, and can really see myself spending the next 4-5 years in Iowa City."
Previously, Petras had been a verbal commitment to Oregon State since May, but after a coaching change in Corvallis this season and a new offer from Iowa, he decided to take a look at the Hawkeyes, who made a good first impression last weekend.
“Iowa City is much bigger than I thought it would be,” Petras said. “It’s a really nice town with great people.”
Petras, who threw for 4,157 yards and 50 touchdowns with only two interceptions this season at Marin Catholic, feels Iowa's pro-style offense will be a good fit for him.
“I watched film with Coach O'Keefe and he felt like I could make all the throws and manage the offense well,” Petras said. “The offense demands a lot from the quarterback position and the staff felt I am a great fit for it.”
Along with Iowa and Oregon State, Petras also picked up scholarship offers from California, Nebraska, Louisville, Fresno State, Syracuse, Colorado State, Nevada, San Diego State, San Jose State, UNLV, and Wyoming during the recruiting process.
Overall, Petras is commitment No. 17 for the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Class of 2018. An early graduate, the four-star prospect plans to enroll at Iowa at semester in January.
