While it is only January of 2016, the Iowa Hawkeyes may have already landed their headliner in the Class of 2017. A.J. Epenesa, a four-star defensive end ranked among the elite players in the country, gave his verbal pledge to the Iowa coaching staff today during his junior day visit with the Hawkeyes.

The 6-foot-5, 255-pound Epenesa, whose father played at Iowa in the 90's, announced his commitment publicly on Twitter shortly afterwards.

Epenesa, who attends high school in Edwardsville, IL, is the fifth commitment for the Hawkeyes in the Class of 2017.

He chose Iowa over scholarship offers from Alabama, Oklahoma, Missouri, Florida State, Michigan, Michigan State, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Nebraska, USC, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Oregon State, Purdue, Tennessee, UCLA, Utah, Washington State, and Vanderbilt, among others.

Currently, Rivals.com ranks Epenesa as the No. 27 prospect in the country, the No. 1 strongside defensive end, and the No. 1 recruit in the state of Illinois.

HawkeyeReport.com will have more on Epenesa and his decision shortly.
