Hawkeyes land Texas LB

Texas linebacker Melvin Spears left his official visit to Iowa on Sunday saying that he saw everything he needed to see and a decision could come shortly. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Spears took a couple of days to think about it, but made the call on Thursday to give the Hawkeyes his verbal commitment.
"I committed to Iowa yesterday," Spears said via text message this morning.

According to Allen High School assistant coach Jeff Fleener, Spears spoke with Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz and lead recruiter Erik Campbell last night to give them the news.
Along with Iowa, Spears held scholarship offers from Minnesota, Arkansas State, and North Texas. The Hawkeyes project the three-star prospect at middle linebacker in college and like his ability to stop the run and drop into coverage.
As a junior, Spears collected 90 tackles and is putting up even bigger numbers as a senior this year with 51 tackles, five TFL, three forced fumbles and an interception through five games this season. Allen High School is currently 5-0 on the year and hosts Plano East tonight.
Spears, who goes by the nickname "Bud" from the Cosby Show, is the fifteenth verbal commitment for the Hawkeyes in the Class of 2011.
HawkeyeReport.com will have more on Spears and his decision later today.
