As a versatile athlete with good speed, Clinton native David Johnson is no doubt on the recruiting radar for several schools around the Midwest. In recent weeks, the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Johnson has been busy making visits to college camps as he hopes to generate more interest.

"I've been to Iowa, Iowa State, NIU, UNI, and Illinois State," said Johnson. "UNI and Illinois State ended up offering."

As a junior, Johnson finished with 502 yards rushing and 408 yards receiving, scoring 11 touchdowns in all. Part of what makes him such an interesting prospect for coaches, along with his speed, is his ability to play several different positions in college.

"At the camps, I've been playing wide receiver, running back, and defensive back," Johnson said.

One team that continues to show interest is the in-state Hawkeyes, who had Johnson on campus for their one-day camp in June. The Iowa coaching staff, who signed offensive lineman Matt Murphy from Clinton this past year, currently plans to wait and evaluate Johnson's senior season.

"I played mostly defensive back and some wide receiver at Iowa's camp," said Johnson. "They keep in touch pretty regularly and have told me they're going watch me closely this season."

The Hawkeyes will not be alone as several other schools will be paying close attention to Johnson, who is going to play more defense in addition to offense in 2009. Currently, the Clinton native plans to take things slow with the recruiting process.

"I think I'm going to wait until after the football season to make my decision," Johnson said. "I'm going to wait and see what happens."
