Go Iowa Awesome has confirmed that former Iowa Western transfer and preferred walk-on Jackson Filer has entered the transfer portal as of Tuesday afternoon.

Filer made the decision in order to seek a larger role on the field elsewhere after not seeing any game action in 2023 for the Hawkeyes.

Filer was a high-profile PWO addition out of the JUCO ranks after he was named the NCJAA Defensive Player of the Year in 2022. That season, he recorded 56 tackles, including 28 tackles for loss and 15.5 sacks for the Reivers. He and Anterio Thompson -- who entered the portal on Monday -- were teammates at Iowa Western.

A three-star recruit when he came out of Council Bluffs, Filer chose the walk-on opportunity at Iowa over offers from programs like Ball State, Coastal Carolina, Louisiana Tech, Charlotte and others.

Filer attended Dowling Catholic High School for his prep career. As a senior for the Maroons, he put up 36 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks en route to earning first team all-conference honors.

Rodney Filer, Jackson's dad played running back for Iowa from 1993-1996.
