Iowa offers 2020 guard

Iowa offers Class of 2020 guard Carson McCorkle

A trip to a basketball camp last month led to a visit to the University of Iowa and put Carson McCorkle on the Hawkeye coaches’ radar. On Tuesday, after evaluating the Class of 2020 guard at an AAU event in Las Vegas in late July, Fran McCaffery extended a scholarship offer.

The 6-foot-2 guard from Raleigh, NC is now headed to his first day of high school this fall with a Big Ten scholarship in hand.

“He had a made a goal for himself that he would earn a scholarship offer by the end of the summer,” said his father Brad McCorkle. “As a dad, I wanted to tell him that might be a stretch, but that’s what he wanted to shoot for, so he’s really happy about it. I think he feels a great deal of gratitude towards the Iowa coaches for not only the offer, but for coming to see him play three times in July.”

As a player, McCorkle is an athletic wing player who has drawn early comparisons to Duke’s Grayson Allen.

“He’s 6-2 and can dunk with ease, which isn’t all that common for someone his age,” his father said. “He’s fast and can get up and down the floor quick and has a good outside shot as well. He handles the ball pretty well and depending on how much he continues to grow, he could probably play point or two guard.”

How he ended up on Iowa’s radar is really a story of luck meeting opportunity. According to his father, Carson was playing at an AAU event in Atlanta and it was suggested that he attend the Crossroads Camp in Indianapolis. From there, he found his way to the Snow Valley Camp in Waverly, IA.

While they were at Snow Valley, the Iowa coaches extended an invitation for an unofficial visit, which took place after the conclusion of the camp.

“It was pretty similar to the other Big Ten schools that we have visited. It was bigger than what we see in North Carolina and more spread out. They have very nice facilities and the coaches made us feel very welcome on the visit.”

The McCorkles also made a visit to Wisconsin and they stopped by Indiana as well. The next stop for Carson will be a trip to see Wake Forest before participating in the Chris Paul Invitational event in Winston Salem over the weekend. He also plans to visit Ohio State on Labor Day weekend. Right now they haven’t made any plans for a return visit to Iowa or any other visits beyond the trip to Columbus next month.
