Michigan safety Kaevon Merriweather is just getting his official visit to Iowa started, but has already decided that he wants to be a Hawkeye. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Merriweather gave his verbal commitment to the Iowa coaching staff tonight.

"The family atmosphere that the Iowa coaching staff and players gave me as soon as I stepped on campus really made me feel like I was home already," Merriweather told HawkeyeReport.com.

"Also, from a football standpoint, Iowa has one of the best defenses in the country every year," he continued. "Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?"

Iowa is the first school to offer Merriweather for football, but the two-sport athlete was considering basketball offers from Western Michigan and Ferris State. Now, he knows which path he is taking in college and is happy to have the weight of his decision off his shoulders.

"It’s an amazing feeling," said Merriweather. "I’m just happy that I’m getting a college education paid for and that I can play the sport I love while doing it. I can’t wait to get to work this summer."

Overall, Merriweather is commitment No. 21 for Iowa in the Class of 2018.
