Klug talks about his commitment

After receiving an Iowa scholarship offer on Sunday night, Minnesota prospect Karl Klug did not waste any time in committing to the Hawkeyes, as he made the phone call to head coach Kirk Ferentz on Monday morning. HawkeyeReport.com caught up with the 6-foot-4, 220-pound Klug, who hails from Caledonia, Minnesota, to talk about his decision and much more.

Q: How did the Iowa offer come about and what have the last couple of days been like for you?

KLUG: It's just been real exciting. When a big school like that offers you a scholarship, it's obviously going to be exciting. On Sunday, Iowa called my coach and then he called my dad. I was at my mom's, so my dad called me and said that Iowa was going to offer me a full scholarship.

Q: Then you called the coaches back on Monday to commit?

KLUG: Yeah and it went well. I talked to Coach Doyle, Coach Ferentz, and Coach Parker. I was just thrilled because they sounded pretty excited. When they sounded excited, it got me excited. Coach Ferentz said it's going to be fun having me there and he looks forward to it.

Q: What position do they see you playing in college?

KLUG: They said linebacker, but the d-coordinator said he can see me playing anywhere on defense. If I gain enough weight, it'll probably be d-end, but right now I think they're looking at me as a linebacker.

Q: When did Iowa first contact you?

KLUG: Well, they were sending me letters last year, but then it was kind of weird because they didn't really call me and these other schools were, so I was kind of wondering what was going on. But, then three weeks ago they invited me to a game and I went down there and everything went real well. They saw my tape and they liked it and now we're here.

Q: Who were some of the other schools calling you?

KLUG: U of M (Minnesota), Northern Iowa, North Dakota, and South Dakota were the main ones. Then Iowa State stopped by a practice, but I don't think I ever got a call from them.

Q: What did you think of the game you went to in Iowa City?

KLUG: Oh, I had fun. That was awesome. I got there at like 6 AM and everyone was already tailgating. Then when you walk into the stadium, there's 70,000 people. It was great. I got to go into the locker room after the game and that was exciting too.

Q: For someone who hasn't seen you play, what do you think you bring to the field as a football player?

KLUG: Well, my coach says that I'm a physical player. I guess I'm mean is what he says. Then I'd say I'm pretty fast for a high school athlete. Really, I just love to play football.

Q: Your twin brother, Kevin, is also receiving some recruiting interest, is that right?

KLUG: He's a little behind because he was injured for half the season last year. He's not getting a lot of attention, but it's still there. I think he's going to need to have a good upcoming playoffs. Iowa is a little interested and they're thinking of him as a walk-on as of right now.

Q: Has everything gone by really fast for you the last two days?

KLUG: Oh yeah, I can't stop thinking about it. I just can't believe it still and I'm kind of in awe yet.

Q: Has playing college football always kind of been a dream for you?

KLUG: Yeah, it's been a dream. It's kind of a long shot right now, but I'm going to bust my butt in college football and hopefully get a shot to play in the NFL. That's a long shot, but I'm going to try.
