Mansell enjoys all-star game

Following a standout senior year at Belton High School, quarterback Peyton Mansell was invited to play in the Blue-Grey All-American Bowl at Dallas Cowboys' AT&T Stadium this week. For the 6-foot-2, 205-pound Hawkeye commit, it was an experience to remember that ended with a 27-24 victory for his West team over the East on Thursday.

“It was a great experience,” said Mansell. “I had a lot of fun getting to know a bunch of guys and making lasting relationships.”

One of Mansell’s receivers on the West team was former Iowa commit Beau Corrales from Georgetown, TX. While it looks like the two will not be attending the same college anymore, they had fun teaming up on the West offense this week.

“I think that ship has sailed, but I know wherever he goes that he'll tear it up,” Mansell said.

As for Mansell himself, he is still dealing with a broken thumb on his throwing hand, which happened during his senior season, but felt like he played pretty well in the all-star game on Thursday all things considered.

“My thumb’s good,” said Mansell. “We haven’t decided on surgery yet.”

“It was hard to get in a rhythm because of the alternating reps, but I thought I had a pretty good showing,” he continued.

Mansell, who plans to make his official visit to Iowa on January 27, remains very active in the Hawkeyes’ recruiting and stays in close contact with the other Iowa recruits, including new wide receiver commit Max Cooper.

“Yes sir, I’m very involved,” Mansell said. “We talk daily.”

As a senior, Mansell finished 189/272 passing (69.5%) for 2,558 yards with 33 touchdowns and 7 interceptions this past season. On the ground, he had 166 carries for 1,132 yards and 15 touchdowns for Belton (8-4).
