With a 6-foot-5, 225-pound frame, Waverly-Shell Rock defensive end Mosai Newsom has the size that Iowa coaches want on the football field.

“I was at Iowa’s junior day," said Newsom. "That is the biggest one right now.”

Newsom was on the Iowa campus later in the winter and had fun with it.

“It was a lot of fun," Newsom said. "I really enjoyed it. The coaches are awesome at Iowa. The facilities are amazing. It is just a great environment.”

The entire trip was something that Newsom spoke highly of.

“I really enjoyed just being around all the great athletes that were there," he said. "Their program has had a lot of success so it was really cool.”

Newsom has a lot of things that he enjoys about the Hawkeyes overall.

“I like it," said Newsom. "I think it is a great school. I am just excited to start the recruiting process and everything.”

His future position could change depending on where Newsom ends up.

“I think they are looking at me as a defensive lineman," Newsom said. "I am still meeting the coaches and trying to form a relationship with them.”

Newsom is planning on getting back to Iowa City on the camp circuit this summer.

“I know I’m going to Iowa, Iowa State, and South Dakota," he said. "I might try to do two more.”

The off-season is allowing Newsom to make improvements overall as an athlete.

“One of the biggest thing is playing defensive line and getting my hands on right away," said Newsom. "I want to be more mobile and do more moves with my hands.”

Newsom is excited to see what his squad can accomplish this fall at the prep level.

“I feel we’ll be pretty good," Newsom said. "I am very confident in my team. I feel like if we keep working we’ll be alright.”
